And the moral of the story is?

Several reviews talk about how this story teaches "small but important lessons" or "has a moral at the end." I'm not sure I'd characterize any of the dilemmas and potential lessons from this movie as "small." While the umbrella is a small thing, and the village is small, the disruption that the beautiful umbrella brings to the village, because of the passions that are in various people's hearts, is massive.

I'm inclined to believe that while there are lessons one can learn from this movie, it is not a kind of Aesop's Fable that teaches one thing.

So what would you call the moral of the story? Here are a few that come to mind for me.

Thou shalt not covet.

Thou shalt not steal.

Sometimes a simple object can bring incredible delight to the one who owns it.

Forgiveness is a precious gift.

Suffering springs from desire.

or maybe:

Community is more valuable than ownership of any object, no matter how special and delightful.
