Pramod is so stupid (spoilers)

Okay so, this is only for people who have seen the entire movie so, if you haven't and don't want it spoiled then, you should stop reading this.

Okay anyways, at the end of the movie when Jacob goes back to India and asks Pramod to go back to Denmark with him, I can't *beep* believe that Pramod would say no to that. For starters, he's an orphan. Being an orphan must be terrible. To be a child who doesn't have anyone to take care of and love them is just so sad and tragic. As far as I know, all orphans want to be adopted. This kid has a man who he is already very close to, and this man wants to be his father, why would you say no to that? If Pramod never gets adopted, I can just imagine how stupid he would feel about saying no to Jacob. Not only that but, he's an orphan in India for crying out loud. I'm not saying that it's a horrible place or anything but, Jacob went to Denmark looking for funds to keep the orphanage running so, that must mean that they need money for food, toys, clothing, etc. Pramod probably realizes that he's living an impoverished life, why wouldn't he want to improve it? Why wouldn't he want to go back to Denmark with Jacob? It makes no sense. He could at least have said that he would like to go there and see what it's like but, he didn't even say that. He just flat out said no. Jacob even told him that he didn't have to give him an answer right away since he would be there for a week so, the fact that Pramod barely thinks about it at all before declining the offer is pretty rude of him. At least think about it for five *beep* minutes. Then again, he is just a tiny little kid. I think that Jacob should have worked harder on telling him what things would be like for them in Denmark, and how much his life would be improved. It's just so ridiculous that a little kid, who's an orphan, in India, living in poverty, who is very close friends with a nice man who wants to not only be his father but, will also bring him a whole new country where he'll have all the food, education, and other essentials that he doesn't have right now would say no to all of that. It's kinda funny though because, right after watching this movie last night, all I thought was that it was pretty good, and how it ended on such a sad note. Then, the more I thought of it, the angrier I became. Pramod is so *beep* stupid.

I was hoping at the end of the week he would change his mind but no the movie ends. He's young and that's the only life he knows but you'd think he would want to stay with Jacob

The kid only knows life in the place he lives --- his friends, the community, etc. He's just 8 yrs old, he can't comprehend that his life would be better in Denmark because to a kid, the unknown is scary.

He also just thinks that Jacob would be easily able to travel back and forth and visit him. The reality is that Jacob won't be able to travel that often but the kid can't comprehend that.

The point of him saying no is that life just continues to throw you curveballs. If fit the story very well ---- it wasn't supposed to be a movie with a 'happy' ending.

Pramod's living conditions improved quite some, since the beginning of the movie.
He is getting an education and he has friends there. It is his culture.

Assuming that Jacob has been away for a few months, Pramod could also rationalise living without Jacob in India.

There's no need to generalise orphans neither. I know one, she grew up in an orphanage, and even without parents she got attached to a lot of the staff that were like parent figures. Orphanage is not always hell, as people think. Often, growing up in a poor and marginal family is worse.

We don't know if Pramod changed his mind, neither.

"Skane110-1", if this was an angry ending, that made you angry and call the boy stupid, then how mature are you? I hope you are not a parent, raising a child in the same narrow un-insightful mentality.

reply

Lol, I don't see how I have a narrow, UN-insightful mentality. I did mention that I could understand the reasons why Pramod would want to stay but, that jacob should have tried harder to explain why it would be better for him to move and be adopted. Kids are stupid at the end of the day, it may sound harsh but, that's just how it is. They rely on adults to help them through life and to make the right decisions. That's another reason why it sucks for orphans to not have that. Also, it's not like I'm calling an actual kid stupid. He's a character in a movie, I blame the writers for having Pramod make such a stupid decision and to end the movie on such a low note.

reply

Yes,that rings true, just look how Jacob says: You don't have to answer right now, and yet the kid does answer 'right now' and Jacob doesn't interrupt him saying: Ok, don't hurry, or: maybe you'll change your mind. It is indeed incredible and yet one might think that this is not the finale and ...well, life goes on :)

Although I thought that part was entirely realistic - he's 8 FFS, why would he want to leave what he sees as a happy life to live somewhere strange where he's been told people are "a$$holes" - I did wonder at the thinking of putting this very anticlimactic scene at the end of the movie. It didn't really seem to teach Jacob anything or further the story or even bring it to a suitable conclusion, so why was it even there? Just to satisfy us that Pramod hadn't been forgotten?

reply

Pramod has lived his entire life in a group home (orphanage). During the time that Jacob was gone, Pramod's dependence on him as a father figure was largely replaced by identification with his peer group. Why would he want to leave his age-mates to go live among strangers in Denmark, especially when, as he says, "Things are so good here now." Possibly he will change his mind by the time he's a teenager and is more aware of the opportunities that life abroad can offer.

You sir , are very ignorant....

I don't think Pramod was expecting to be adopted - this so far as I can tell is a place for kids to stay until they reach adulthood, not a place to wait until they find parents. He had grown up in this place with other kids who I assume he sees as siblings and he is being invited to move to a country where he knows nobody but Jacob - a country which Jacob has made sound awful where everyone is selfish and unkind. Perhaps if he actually went he would realise that's not really how it is but he's a child and trusts Jacobs description of it
