What was the point of the groom's infidelity?

What was the point of the groom's infidelity? i dont get the extra layer? to give him reason to stay?

and i thought it was gonna be the mother lol wasnt he talking on the phone with her?

If Anna had stayed married happily, she would be more independent. If Jacob had felt she could handle her own life problery in a solid relationsship, one of the key foundations of him staying would be diminished. When Christian cheats on Jacobs daughter, she is very unhappy and vulnerable. It shows Jacob, how much his family/daughter still needs him in Denmark. It furthermore helps him getting closer to his daughter and by getting closer to her, he also gets closer to Helene.

To answer the last question, I didnt see any romantic connection between Helene and Christian. If you noticed at the start of the movies when Jacob and Jørgen first meet, Christian is flirting with the receptionist(which he later sleeps with) complimenting her dress etc. Later at the wedding we are also told she is his ex-girlfriend.

It's been a while since I watched this film, but at the time I immediately drew a parallel between Christian cheating on Anna with what happened between Jacob and Helene (Anna's mother). Jacob cheated on Helene with her best friend, and that's why she left him and left India. Now the tables are turned and it's his daughter, Anna, who has been cheated on.

More to the point why would the groom be stupid enough to do that, he clearly struck me as the type of guy who saw an oppertunity therefore married the daughter cos her father (the one who raised her) was rich. If thats your reasons for marrying someone DO NOT be stupid enough to cheat so openly. Cos now its a quickie divorce and no money for him lol.

Ashmi any question

Selfish, ruthless people make stupid mistakes all the time.

All of the above from the posters is true.

I think it also demonstrates that neither Christian nor Anna was actually ready to be married, referenced also by a statement he made during his wedding speech. She didn't really know what he was really like( perhaps something like her father 20 years previous) and he supposedly growing tired of her, because she was showing some interest in her father.

I don't buy it. They were JUST married and he bangs a chic on the couch with no absolute knowledge of when Anna was coming home?

Rich or poor.....men don't usually goof up THAT bad.

some extra drama, i guess the director thought it wasn't melodramatic enough
