Disappointed

I had high hopes for "Skyland", since the promo spot they ran was a thing of beauty.

However, the one hour pilot let me down. First, the dialog was very stilted and obvious. I don't know if this was because it was translated from French or something else. They set up the characters and the setting with massive lumps of exposition instead of letting characters unfold. We're told everything about them right away instead of learning about them as we go.

Second, the rotoscoping. This is a personal preference, but I don't like it. To me it looks unnatural, even though it is supposed to make characters move in a more lifelike fashion. Maybe I'm accustomed to non-rotoscoped animation.

"Skyland" is obviously anime-influenced, but it doesn't achieve the sense of being a "real world" that the best anime shows do.

"Avatar", for instance, is produced by Nickelodeon (and currently airing on YTV), and has a similar premise (orphaned brother and sister on quest in fantasy world with magic powers), but the writing is vastly better. It shows that the US can make shows that draw on the best aspect of Japanese animation.

It's worse than rotoscoping: it's CGI pretending to be hand-drawn. There are a couple anime movies (e.g., Appleseed) that's done the same thing but still looks lame.

So if it's CGI, then it's probablly motion capture (hence the rotoscope look/feel). The problem with mo-cap is that too many production houses rely on it too heavily and don't do enough actual animating on their own. I also saw the trailers and the concept looked amazing. I'll probablly check it out for myself, but that still too bad.

there's nothing wrong with appleseed, the graphics are amazing and the dialog was great.

Quit bashing perfectly good shows

Actually I have to disagree--I didn't enjoy Appleseed either. I wanted to like it so bad--but I had to turn it off half way through. The plot was trite and it's been done a million times, (better in most cases). It's like they just ran out of story. I liked the characters at first, but I just don't get the Japanese fascination with dumb sex-toy type women. It's gross in an animation. Nothing beats Akira for sci-fi. Steamboy came close though.

I do think that the animation was great, but Appleseed was in the end, it's own worst enemy.

Ditto.

I feel so sad now. I saw the commercial on TV and it looked really good, the animation or as people say rotoscoping. I'll see this weekend if it's as bad as people say.

I must agree, this show looks amazing and this storyline has potential. Unfortunately the writing, characters, and voice acting is horribly bad. What a waste...

Totally agree. Animation looks wonderful, stunning, fascinating. But really, the writing and audio rivals that of the crap 'kids' shows we all have today.
