When Peter is talking with the police about Sondra's drowning, she appears soaking wet and he acts like he's been caught red-handed.

Couldn't he just have said, "I thought you drowned!! Thank God you're alive!"?

Good point. He certainly could have done that.

It's also plausible that he was too stunned to realize that that was an option.

How would things have gone if he HAD said that? I think Sondra/Jade and Sydney had enough evidence to nail him by that point -- but it certainly could have ended up very messy.

Sondra could have said that he pushed her off the boat but he could have said that she was a nutty person who said that she was someone else and is now making wild accusations, along with her equally crazy 'father'.

I'm not sure Woody Allen really thought through the screenplay but a pretty good film nonetheless.
