Scarlett's Acting

Please tell me that someone else had the urge to hit Scarlett Johansson over the head after watching this movie? Girl is drop-dead gorgeous, don't get me wrong, and a great dramatic actress. But really, she has not one comedic bone in her body...at least not for this kind of wacky Woody sort of movie.

I can't think of someone who would have been better in this role...any thoughts?

He's reading to his pigeons! Duuuh!

My sentiments exactly. I have the highest regard for Scarlett's acting. She is very talented and I have seen quite a few of her films. This was the first comedic role I saw her in and quite frankly she was horrible. Comedy is definitely not her thing, she should stick to dramas. Her acting, usually flawless and natural, seemed forced and phoney here. Woody was a hoot, Hugh was (even though badly underused) good, but that was to be expected. Anyway, Scarlett was miscast.
Lindsay Lohan might have pulled it off. I can't really think of other young American actresses right now. Weird.

I disagree. I thought she was very funny in this movie, kind of a dry humor. While I was watching it I was thinking that she should do more comedic roles. Woody had funnier lines than her so maybe that's why you might not have seen her comedic side. I'm sure she'll improve if she chooses to do more comedic roles.

but scarlett and woody were doing a brilliant job together...and I really liked that scarlett changed her role for a change...she's too much pushed into the role of a vamp anyway!

reply

Oh man...Lindsay Lohan?????????? Are u nuts??

reply

Lindsay is a really good actress and great at comedy. Maybe you should go watch a few of the films she got famous for. And before all the drugs, around 2006, she was pretty cute too. I think she is a better actress when she wants to be than Scarlett, jmho.

You can't think of other young actresses?

How about Rachel McAdams, Christina Ricci. Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larsen, Emma Stone, Mila Kunis, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightly, Michelle Williams, Emma Watson, Isla Fisher, Olivia Wilde, Anna Hathaway, Sienna Miller (some of them admittedly a bit young for the role here at the time but alas)

These are scores of other young female actors capable of matching and surpassing Scarlett's efforts here, they're probably just not as famous as the ones I listed.

reply

Isla Fisher would have been great here, as would Rose Byrne.

SJ is a terrible actress - I've never once been impressed with her work. And I've seen her in lots of films...unfortunately 

"Puss rules!"
"It's Pus"

reply

I agree with you.
She didn't seem natural at all, she was suposed to look anxious and excited and didn't convince me. I enjoyed the film a lot, anyway.

I thought Scarlett was very good in this, and I'm usually not that much of a fan of her. She was exactly what the part called for - likeable and plucky.

reply

This was the first film with Scarlett Johansson I'd ever seen, and I thought she was delightful in a light comedy role. However, SJ in Vicky Cristina Barcelona is entirely out of her depth, and came off as the weak link in a film with an otherwise outstanding cast. It's too bad SJ hasn't done more comedy roles like the one in Scoop.

She's awful in drama, but especially wretched in comedies

She's received four Golden Globe nominations since Lost in Translation, and the Academy won't ignore her much longer either. She's one of the best young actresses out there, not that someone posting bonehead comments would realize.

it's a pretty thin herd out there for great acting these days imo. You really think Scarlett could pull of many of the roles Meryl Streep was in? Try watching Kramer vs Kramer or Sophie's Choice and tell me Scarlett could even come close to that kind of acting. Name ONE female lead today who could act like Streep? Maybe Hillary Swank.

reply

I liked her in this movie.

reply

She was funny! I was cracking up. It was a delightful change for her, and shows she has a range of acting. More power to her!

reply

I couldn't agree less with the OP. I thought Scarlett was very funny in this and a couple times you could really see Woody Allen coming out in her. She was the best actress for this role, hands down. So many actresses these days try to be funny and aren't. I'm thinking of people like Lindsey Lohan who do romantic comedies and they all do the same "oh no, look what happened... I'm so cute" routine. Johansson seems to be above this, which is fantastic. Hell of a rack too. :)

- Don't tease me about my hobbies, I don't tease you about being an assh*le.

I honestly think Scarlett did a nice job in this movie, anyway I don't think she suited the role the best, funny actress like Anna Faris could have done a better job I believe. But I enjoyed Ms. Johanssons acting nevertheless, you cannot possibly say that she has no sense of humour, because she does

reply

Absolutely. Cute film, Allen is even funny, McShane is cool, Jackman is hot and good, but Scarlett, God bless her, does no utter one convincing line in the entire movie. Shame too, cause she is not a bad actress. She sounded so false, fake, wooden, could not deliver the joke if you put a gun to her head. Nice movie otherwise.

reply

How about a Tea Leoni, playing a 30-year old? She has the right frenetic Woody Allen energy..... And is a gorgeous enough woman to attract our Hugh?

I actually thought that she came really close to pulling the character off. My problem was this:

She started out well. I was impressed but noticed that she was struggling a little. However, if I were face to face with a ghost, and told so and so was a serial killer, it would affect how I behaved. Scarlett didn't change at all. Either her character is completely stupid, or is insane.

I vote for insane, and yes, I would have smacked her about 15 minutes into the movie, just to wake her up.
