Just Another NBA Thug

That guy was in the league what like 5 minutes and got caught carrying a gun on the team plane.

No thanks but I will skip this one.

Ok, first of all Sebastian admitted to the mistake of the gun. He ended up with his girlfriend's purse on the road trip and in it was her gun, not Sebastian's gun. He did make a mistake in not telling anybody about it, but it's not like he was taking it somewhere to put it to use. He's not a thug, despite what you believe.

And he's not that great of a player? What is he now, 20 years old? I think I'll give a guy a little more time in the league before I judge him as "not that great." Last few games for the Blazers he is actually playing very well, and has re-earned his starting role.

Give the guy time. He'll be a starter in this league for the majority of his career, and within a few years should be one of the best point guards around.

I agree, offspring. If people actually see the film instead of making snap judgements about him, you really tend to believe that the gun thing was a simple (dumb) mistake. He's no thug, and it's really sad to see people so eager to label him that way, and hence blow off this movie, which is really a great, inspiring story. I think people just really love it when they can typecast someone to fit their personal biases.

And it's definitely too soon to write him off as a player. He's really good - he just needs to find the right situation where he can thrive and mature.

reply

I thought the movie was awesome.

I am not sure how anyone could label him as a thug---he is anything but. I have watched lots of kids from the "inner city" coming up trying to make it. He unlike some others I have seen is humble, has a good family and comes from good stock. Also the boy has got skills. Trust me they are not gonna give him contracts and the like and he be just ok. Have you any idea how many ballers out there are trying to make it? He obviously has something.

I for one am proud of him, proud of this film, and happy to see someone on the "big screen" who is not a thug!

reply

Why does his girlfriend carry a gun? Was it registered? I mean come on you don't need to carry guns around like that. And don't tell me that it's for protection. Who's trying to shoot him/her?

reply

The gun is registered in Oregon to his girlfriend. They frequent a shooting range in the Portland area where they use it.

reply

no way is he a thug; stop being racist

reply

I have a New York pistol permit and I would never think of bringing it to the airport or letting anyone else other than me carry the gun. It's just a simple rule that comes with the understanding of gun safety. I just don't get how people can make mistakes like that. I'm not saying he's a thug or anything, I liked the movie and he seemed like a well rounded kid. But, I can't get over bringing guns to airports. I know in New York I can't bring it to bars, schools, or airports.

reply

he didn't know he had the gun until he was already on the plane. he had taken the wrong bag by mistake.

reply

yeah you're a dumbass if you believe that.

reply

That's right, everyone is a liar, right? I do believe it. I know the kid. He's not a thug, chief.

reply

The boy is not a thug...he just made an error in judgement.

reply

for real. would he be a "thug" if he was a middle-aged white man? what the hell kind of term is that anyway?

Oh, who else saw Anthony single handedly lose the game for his team tonight against the Clipps? They're down 2 , with a 1:11 to go and he gets fouled. Instead of going to the free throw line and tying the game he decides to sling the ball into the stands. Giving the Clipps a free throw and possession. He is an idiot. How hard is it to control your temper WHEN YOU GOT THE FOUL CALLED. I hate the NBA.

LOL... Sounds like you lost a bet on that game. Should've taking the point spread... :-)

I remember Barry Switzer, the former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was caught w/ a gun at an airport in 1997. Noone called him a thug.

reply

regardless of whether or not hes a thug, dont play the race card. it just makes you look like an idiot

reply

[deleted]

yeah, i remember that, no one called that guy a thug

Before seeing the documentary my perception of Telfair was that he was an arrogant thug. However, after seeing the documentary, he's clearly just the opposite. He's well spoken, well groomed, and he doesn't have one tattoo.

Also, he's one hell of a hard worker who has talent and built upon that. He's young, and he'll continue to improve and become a solid pro. The list of "initial busts" that turn into solid pros by year 3 is long and distinguished. He just finished year 2 and has played much more than most of them thus far.

reply

My mom has a tattoo.

reply

So does AI.

reply

this guy might not be a thug but hes totally fake. in the documatary his brother even tells him to smile all the time and be nice. his brothers groomed him to be a "nice guy" so he would have a better chance of being drafted and get endorsment deals. ok and i learned all this just from watching that one movie... if you watched this movie and couldnt put this together in your head you are blind

reply

Jamel was being a role model to his brother and keeping him straight. Being positive and up beat coming from where he's from is great accomplishment. If his mom was to say the same thing then it wouldnt matter. Everyone is part of his upbringing and taking care of the younger kids in the family. Im sure Sebastian does the same for his little brother. As for the gun thing, I'll take him for his word. Last time I checked, Portland wasn't too dangerous, although my brother has visited and said there pretty racist out there.

reply

I liked how he kept telling everyone he was still going to Louisville, even though he'd clearly already decided he was going pro. Pretty deceitful for a 17 year old kid.

reply

Barry Switzer was caught at the airport with a Gun is he a thug? Just a question

reply

Tell me the NBA is not full of thugs.

Look at Carmelo Anthony a guy the NBA wanted to make a golden boy.

He gets caught on video threatening a guy if the guy talks to the police.

What a joke. And he was supposted to be one of the good guys.

To me it's like baseball. I now assume all baseball players are cheaters on HGH or roids.

And I assume all NBA Players think they are tough guys that have to carry to keep their street cred.

Not to mention it is the biggest joke in the world a large percentage of the NBA are drug users to at least the level of pot.

And anybody that says Telfair carried that gun on the plane by accident is pretty naive or just plain ignorant.

reply

That's a pretty cool attitude man - now tell me, what do you think of the white players?

reply

If everyone on the planet used your assumption skills, this would be a pathetic world. Assuming that a whole group of people are gulity of something because of the faults of a few is stupid. Why don't I just go on assuming that all white men are cannibals and mass murderers because Jeffery Dahmer and Charles Manson were white men then?? THAT would be naive and ignorant. That's why they say you can't judge a book by its cover.

reply

u make no sense what so ever please dont talk about something you know nothing about please for crying out loud!!!!!!!!

reply

Does he study the Qur'an?

reply

wha?

reply

big deal he had a gun i would hav a gun if i was an nba star but i wouldnt carry it with me but hes black so hes more likely to be in a confrontation than me and more likely to need one.... thats not the problem..... the problem is these nba and nfl players going to strip joints and night clubs 2 or 3 oclock in the morning in large packs and starting arguements w/ people and causing problems... then someone gets pushed and they whip out a gun... i suggest they stay at home and order their hoes on the phone

reply

id like to respond to the guy who said u shouldnt judge a book by its cover.... the truth is that black people do commit about 70 percent of the crime in the US and that is because of A LOT of DIFFERENT reasons but mainly the fact that most of them are poor. and u could say all white people are serial killers if u want because that wouldnt be far from the truth because there has yet to be a legitimate non-white serial killer and im white and i dont really care... stop whining and crying about every little thing... u are wats wrong with our world today

reply

I'd like to respond to whyteout7791-1 because he seems to ASSume things...So because "black people do commit about 70 percent of the crime in the US" (I'd love to see your source for that), that means most black people are going to commit a crime because "most of them are poor"?

Since you totally seemed to miss the point, I'm making the argument that it is dumb to judge a book by its cover because not all people "fit the profile" based on outward appearance alone. Do you have the ability to recognize I used the mass murderer-cannibal/ white people analogy to show how ridiculous is is to assume that just because someone is white that they are going to kill you and fry you up in a pan? You say you don't care but maybe you should...

If I were stupid I would just assume that Caucasians are ignorant and moronic cannibals based your demonstration of such in your post; I do not think this because I know there are good and bad people of all backgrounds. Its dumb to just carelessly assume that I will cause you harm just because I'm black, or that I'm black so I must be a "poor" thug looking to rob you (I am not a guy BTW, I am female). Its THOUGHTLESS people like you that are REALLY what's wrong with our world today...
