SAS guy 'Wolf' gives Alex his cap badge.

That would never happen. Not in a million years would a member of the British forces give away his cap badge. It represents your regiment and your Queen, and you simply do not part with it. It's like a miniature version of losing the colours.

Also, you'd never get given another one, and you'd like an idiot with just a gap on your headress.

I'm anespeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

I didn't get a close look at them - it's possible they might have been issued straight-pull manually operated rifles. Otherwise, yes, they would need a BFA if they wanted to fire more than just the one blank round. And BFAs are kinda hard to miss - bright yellow whatsits on the end of the barrel. Or they could have been resorting to our old CCF standby of pointing the gun and yelling 'bang'.

When I was a cadet, there was no chance I would ever have given anyone my cap badge, not for love nor money. Even now, I still have my last rank slides, and I left a year ago.

Pur-lease, of course someone would give their cap badge away if they so pleased, for example at bisley, a random guy i'd never met gave me his spare hackle and you can make a reasonable amount of money from selling kit, eg. cap badges to other people (some people collect them.) especially if you have a less common one, they are quite easily reissued. Also, it shows 'wolf's' respect for 'cub', which was obviously the intention.

Besides, i don't know how much you know about the armed forces, but kit goes "missing" quite a lot, so it would be quite within the realms of possibility for 'wolf' to say that someone nicked it.

Another example of kit trade-age, me and my friends went into the artists rifle clubhouse and they were practically tripping over themselves to give us mars and minerva cap badges. so it's really not that uncommon.

As for the BFA thing, it depends on whether or not they were going to fire blanks, the weapon system, the scenario etc. also, as it's the SAS, i don't think they would compromise being seen by having a BFA for believability/real life situation. and BFA's are not always needed, they just cut the safety distant down A LOT. :)

The main issue i have with 'wolf' is that he, with complete disregard for all safe handling rules, simple hands his rifle to alex and also then leaves it with him afterwards (he's obviously never heard of the rifleman's creed) but this is a minor issue with the whole of the movie, eg. why is there a fat man as a squaddie in the SAS. Grr.

Hope that helps.

You give it away on your last day (if there is someone who deserves it in your opinion and you have some kind of relaionship with him, else you keep it) or after you retired from active duty. No other possibility.
People who handle it otherwise would probably also let the flag touch ground.

I can understand not giving away a rank slide or distinguishing badge, but cap badges are ten-a-penny. You're not telling me you're given one uniform with one cap and expected to use the same one in your whole time in the military?

You're only supposed to blow the doors off!

You get changes of uniform, but only one item of headdress (beret, buzzby, bearskin etc etc). I'm sure you could get it replaced, but you'd be very much looked down upon if you lost yours.

It's simply because your headdress, like your rank slides, represents the unit that you serve, and therefore your queen and country. They might cost tuppence ha'penny, but the value to each soldier is far far higher.
