I agree.. I thought it was a really nice movie. But I honestly don't get why people keep raving on and on about this movie. It's good, but I don't get why people think it's anything special.

reply

Hey saw it a few hours ago, nothing special, I gave a 7. Hugely overrated, imo.

I tried watching it 3 times and every time I couldn't make it past 45 minutes, it's kinda boring.

You can knock on Ed Wood but it won't do you no good 'cause all of my heroes are dead in Hollywood

Lucky for you, Transformers is in cinema right now!

Original insults really aren't your suit are they, Clockwire?

I thought there would be more creatures and more fantasy involved, but not really.. :\

No, it's not overrated.

It is actually the most atmospheric and original movie produced in the 21st century.

I get that the protagonist is not the most likeable character you have ever seen but this is a dark fairytale. Nothing of it is supposed to be likeable.

That was my biggest problem. I don't even mind the stereotypes as characters, occasionally such extreme evil can be fun to watch. But I disliked the girl severely.

reply

The characters are so stereotyp ... just like in Pacific Rim.

reply

why isn't Ofelia likable? I liked her

reply

I don't get how she is unlikeable either. I'd go so far as to say she's almost the only likeable character.

I think the biggest problem with this film is the characterization. Everyone is a one-dimensional stereotype, demonstrating either absolute benevolence or chronic malevolence. That may be in keeping with the story's fairy tale roots, but it did make it a little difficult for me to become invested in the characters' plights. I really loved this film when I saw it in theaters, but in subsequent viewings, I've found that I don't really care for the war subplot. The fantasy sequences will always be special and memorable to me, but the real-world elements no longer resonate.

When I first saw this film, I would have rated it no less than 9/10, but today, I would be generous and rate it 7/10, most of which is probably due to nostalgia.

What you say is true.
Mercedes has dilemas between helping as a spy, helping the Young girl and acting like a real soldier. Sometimes Ofelia has choices to make between staying with the familly or getting more involve in the Pan thing. It helps making them more human and more likable but they stays a bit stereotypal and one-dimensional.
But, in an other hand, it makes everything more in a fairy tale way, don't you think? Don't know if it was volontary or not.
I'd also like to say that, even if Vidal is almost 100% pure eval, Sergi Lopez plays him so well you really believe in the guy and love watching him.
