The kid's mother was the annoying one...

...insisting that he 'make friends' when he's obviously quite happy by himself, or maybe he's after Natalie Portman (I know she's getting on a bit, but she's quite 'well preserved' for a 27-year-old), and then saying he should do it by choosing someone at random and saying, 'Hi!' and then objecting when he brings home a 30-ish accountant. (Don't you think you're a bit old... for dressing up?)

What a loser.

All that on the side, what is the character Eric supposed to be doing in the film? It's not clear how he came to be an effective (underage) co-worker in the store. I know he acts as the narrator (despite the quite false claim that the story is written from the point of view of the freak in the basement).

It seems they forgot to include a proper story.

That's the point. He's not so happy by himself. Did you miss the scene where he longingly looked out the window at the other kids hanging out? Um, any good parent would be rightly shocked to see a grown man in he son's bedroom when she's not home and she has no idea who he is. Whether she keeps that opinion or not would remain to be seen and could change but a proper parent should have the same gut reaction. We do not live in a world of candy canes and rainbows with fluffy bunnies singing happy songs. People have to be careful. But the scene moved along well as Henry quickly left and Eric's mom seemed to relax realizing her son was okay.

As to the rest, you obviously missed the point of the story so we'll just end here.
