How did this movie receive poor reviews?

I thought it was incredible.

Clearly too many people didn't believe in the magic of the store!

I thought it was a decent film, not too memorable but a nice 1.5 hour if you're not really doing anything else.

I read in www.wikipedia.org that movie critics and viewers:

-"colorful visuals and talented players can't make up for a bland story."
-"the year's Worst Family Film on his list of the Worst Movies of 2007. However, in recognition of the fact that it was "aimed directly at very young children" (along with the fact that the movie teaches children death)
...."unforced and exceedingly gentle humor, its imaginative but never-quite-excessive production design and its ingratiating and surprisingly detailed performances...."

8 years later...Bambi taught children about Death. It's how I learned at 4. I was not happy.

Inception was incredible. This film was derivative and predictable. While I enjoyed the movie, I can understand and even agree with much of the criticism it has received.

This is one of those movies that was made for the wrong demographic. It's presented as a kid movie in every way but I find that stoners really like this movie, not kids!

Bad, over-excessive CGI is what counts as magic nowadays?

Oh dear.

It's a pretty silly movie and not the good kind of silly either, it's fairly dull. It's also disappointing considering Zach Helm made it and he wrote Stranger than Fiction, which was an all around clever, fascinating, and inspiring movie. It also comes across as being pretentious at times too and the tone is a bit off, is it meant to be a straight up comedy or a serious fantastical drama? Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman both looked pretty bored too and had that "where's my paycheck?!" look to their faces throughout.

My ignore list is quite large.

Yeah, good question. Don't get it. More than holds up on a rewatch too.

Maybe it was too simple and sweet for the critics.

I wouldn't say incredible but I liked it and if I had a small children I would take him or her to the theatre to see this.
