How big is Jeffery Donovan's role?

Is it a major supporting role...or just a brief appearance?

He has a decent sized role, he appears throughout the movie. He is not the main focus like his character in Burn Notice.

It's such a wonderful role. His character Cal, is so charmingly authentic that he makes you want to find a southern boy of your own. I heard the director say, at Sundance I think, that if she'd ever met Cal in real life, she'd be married by now.

And that's the remarkable thing, JD really is Cal. (His accent is perfect, too.) Cal is an entirely different character, like the polar opposite of super cool, super controlled Michael Westen from Burn Notice, or the off beat David Creegan from Touching Evil. The director also said they auditioned a lot of actors, but when Jeffrey read for the part, she knew immediately that he was the Cal she had written.

One of my favorite scenes n the movie is when he and Lucy go on their first date, which isn't exactly going well, until they dance. The chemistry is amazing, and all he does is slightly tilt his head toward her and you can completely feel it. And later, when he's tipsy, he plays that so well, so realistically, not over the top like a lot of people play drunk. There's another favorite scene where he's working on a model car and Lucy's being a bit of a pain and he's becoming exasperated but trying to stay patient. I just love his scenes in this movie. It wouldn't have been the same movie without him.

His portrayal of Cal made me a total believer in Jeffrey Donovan the actor. I swear, if you could put all these different characters he's played in the same room, you'd swear they were all different people. Wow, I would love to see that. Maybe someday with holograms. lol.
