Jorge's roommate...and the choking scene

I didn't understand a lot of this movie and I'd appreciate guidance. Who was Jorge's roommate? Was it his brother? A friend? A ghost? Toward the end, he seemed to be taunted by the guy. Also, the guy never seemed to get up in the apartment. I wondered whether he was in a wheelchair, but that was never revealed. And I was most curious about why, in one of the early scenes, the guy asked Jorge if he wanted sex. Was he representing Jorge's conscience?

And off that topic, but still regarding my lack of understanding of the film, was Jorge putting the bone in the soup in order for Amy to choke on it? Was he hoping to kill her because he didn't perceive she liked him or did he hope to save her with the Heimlich maneuver and win her love?

reply

the 'roommate' doesn't exist, its not his conscience but his inner voice. How else does he seem to know everything that happens to Jorge, Jorge wouldn't have told him, he barely speaks as it is.

He most likely left the bones is the soup so he could save her, also the 'roommate' compared his shyness was to choking, the 'roommate' also said something like "now that you have felt something make her fell something." His thinking might have been that if she experiences choking then she will understand his shyness, and that he needs saving from his 'choking' as well.

of course its open to interpretation, he could be schizophrenic, and was trying to kill her.

reply

I never thought his 'roommate' was actually his inner voice... Good interpretation and thanks for postin' that!

reply

hmm well the roommate is open to interpretation. it's left vague. i guess he does make more sense as an inner voice. but then how did the guy get to have his own flat? that seems difficult to imagine. maybe the roommate existed and he killed him? the roommate never gets up coz hes always watching TV, but it is a bit creepy.

like esoterik i think jorge was putting the bone in the soup so amy would choke, and then he could save her, becuase he is so inept that seems easier than broaching conversation. it doesn't really make sense but as a metaphor it's quite nice. and it does have *hilarious* consequences!

You really thought the roommate was real...?
He sits on a chair staring at a blank tv all day. The second he was introduced, Jorge turned the tv on for "him", even though the guy was already staring at the tv...Within the 1st 5 seconds we are led to believe that he is not really there, because if he was real he'd be watching tv, and acting human.

As noted, he also knows what happened to Jorge at work daily, right when he gets home.

He's all in Jorges mind. It's all his self-loathing in form of a "friend", someone to keep him company.

And yeah, he wanted to rescue the girl. He felt threatened by his co-worker who was winning her heart, so he decided to do something drastic.

that guy was the dude from the choking man poster.

reply

Exactly! He was the alter ego/split personality as represented by the man who appears depicted at from the choking man poster! I thought Jorge wasn't just shy, I though he perhaps had schizofrenia (hearing voices, seeing things, watching this non-existent person from a poster come to life).

reply

The person in his apartment is his alter ego/things hes thinking at times.

Fantastic movie imo, loved it!

reply

At the end, he exotcises his evil half, and makes a bunny to be his companion at home, where he is lonely...

reply

I noticed he made the bunny ears the same size.

reply

No.. the bunny had different sized ears.

The roommate might be a projection of what he hopes to be: articulate, handsome, witty and proactive.
