Questions

Hey, if anyone has any questions and want to ask the filmmaker, fire them at me! I actually enjoy responding back to fans (and critics believe it or not!)

As of today, we have one more night of filming and we will be done (baring any reshooting). The editing and post production phase usually takes 3 to 5 months. So right now I'm planning on having a "print" in October. Though I've talked to several distributors, I've decided to wait until the film is finished before deciding.

Take care all!

I Have been reading that your hoping for a theatrical release...any hope there?

also something that really seems to help filmmakers alot is sundance and cannes...are you going to try with any of those?

If not ( and I hope it does get to the big screen...or at least a limited run.) Do you have an estimate on the Dvd release?

And how about the MIFED 2005?

I've been to MIFED (2001) right after 9-11. Actually watched Lou Diamond's "Lone Hero" there. We probably will start selling foreign by that time-- but many distributors are bailing on MIFED. We'll have to see. But if the distributors are going, there's a good chance Bloodlines will be there this fall.

Their official website still doesn't offer any info on the 2005 event and who'll be there. Let's hope a lot of interesting companies will participate.

A theatrical release is a very tough fish to land. With DVD and television, all the distributor has to front are some small marketing costs and the tapes. With a theatrical, a company has to have deep pockets, spending millions to get the advertising and the prints necessary to generate buzz and activity. We will just have to see. I certainly am hoping.

Sundance goes after the "art house" films. These are usually dark dramas that are very hard to sell in the foreign market. "Bloodlines" is a thriller. I doubt Sundance would look very closely at it... but you never know. Cannes really only takes a couple of American films and it's usually reserved for high profile directors.

If I finish in October and don't get a theatrical, you're probably looking at a summer 2006 release (all depending on who we end up going with).

Thanks,
Dan

If you are targeting a theatrical release how many companies are existing which could handle an international distribution of BLOODLINES for more than just one or two countries? Or do you have to find a distributor for each and every single country/language in e.g. Europe?

Btw. what's the reason that for DVD releases the rights to use the songs of a movie/series are usually (?) handled differently to theatrical releases?

Many thanks for the info and the offer to reply on questions!!

Are you planning to publish additional info, images and maybe even a teaser before a distributor is found? How about a BLOODLINES website and/or forum? Or will we have to wait till October or later for that?

For the IMDb entry you've chosen THRILLER as the genre of BLOODLINES while articles and blogs are talking about a "spy thriller/science fiction" or "action/suspense film". Does BLOODLINES actually have suspense/scifi elements?

You've been able to hire a very impressive cast for BLOODLINES. How do indie productions manage to hire such stars? Is it e.g. the quality of the script? The fact, that indie films, in difference to the big productions, still contain new and interesting ideas? The small team creating a more family like atmosphere? The rather short periode of shooting?

Dex, you always have great questions. When I get a little time, I will be tossing up some previews, behind the scenes videos and tons of pics. Usually I create and maintain my own websites but having trouble finding the time lately. Maybe I need to go the Kevin Smith route and have a couple of fans maintain and administer the websites. I do have one volunteer taking a crack at creating the Bloodlines movie website.

Bloodlines has elements of sci-fi. But really it's an action/thriller.

The key for a low budget indie in getting a great cast is hiring a good LA based Casting Director. Low budget filmmakers would be surprised at how much these actors want to work. It's harder to get the actors to want to come down and do low budget on a thriller (as opposed to a juicy drama that's more fun to do and has the potential upside of art house theatrical and festivals). But we were fortunate. Lou really liked the elements in this script that seperate this story from the usual thrillers. I guess when it comes out, you all will be the judge. :)

Previews, bts clips and tons of pics of BLOODLINES to check out sounds great!! I'm pretty sure that will cause some "decent" traffic on your server. ;)

With the post production to handle now I can imagine that you have to be more than busy, so it's good to hear you are having someone taking care of the page already. Are you planning to put up a HTML version of the website first or will you start right away with a FLASH version similar to the very cool ones of THE GUNMAN ( http://www.the-gunman.com/ ) and THE KEYMAN ( http://www.the-keyman.com/ )?

With so many casting agencies in LA it has to be pretty hard to find the perfect one to work with. So, you think that many of the low budget filmmakers are not really aware that they could hire stars for their projects if they tried it the right way? Wouldn't it be worth to offer workshops and detailled guidelines on that subject?

BLOODLINES also has sci-fi elements, and there are elements, seperating the story from the usual thrillers, which Lou really liked ... hmmm, I think I can say for me that this little info will make it significantly harder and harder for me to wait for the release! :)

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply on the posts!!

Daniel,

I just wanted to leave a note to express my gratitude for your open and friendly candor. Not many directors would welcome comments from both critics and fans alike. I will confess to not being familiar with your films, I came across "Bloodlines" while looking for Lou's newest projects. (I have been a fan since Young Guns!) I intend on putting your titles on my to rent list and I will be awaiting Bloodlines with great anticipation. I'll be looking for your website as well. I live in the midwest, 70 miles outside of Kansas City where Indie films are lucky to have one copy at Blockbuster, never any theater releases or screen showings. But were out here, fans of good movies!!

Good Luck!

PS Tell Lou he still has an adoring fan, even if I am 30 something now!

Hello Dan,

Thanks for the info and updates on the filming. I've noticed you've done this with The Gunman as well. It's good to read the filming progress on the websites as it's happening. I've been waiting for the Gunmam to be released over here (Scotland) as I'm a fan of Jeff Speakman. I see he's in Bloodlines also. Can you tell me what he's like to work with?

reply

This isn't Dan, but I am a producer of the movie with Dan. The one thing I'll tell you about Jeff is that he takes his martial arts VERY seriously. So much so, that we had to ask him to be careful how hard he hit (or not to hit) fellow actors in some of the fight scenes for Bloodlines.

Here's a sneak peek at the new trailer:

Hi Hitman, Jeff is very nice to work with. He's always been very supportive of me in my filmmaking effort. In this movie, he has a bigger role. He's going to be the main bad guy. In A Promise Kept, it's not as big. BTW, Promise is playing in the UK. It's not called "The Gunman" there... so look under "A Promise Kept."

Been watching Monarch of the Glen. Can't wait to visit Scotland. My ancestry's from there.

BTW, higher resolution trailer at http:www.s-films.com/ftp/TRAILER1c_Custom3.wmv

Thanks for the reply Dan and Jeff.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie...if we ever get it here. I'm a student of the Martial Arts myself and this is how I came to know some of Jeff Speakman's movies. I'll look out for "A Promise Kept" here in Scotland.

It may sound strange but I've never watched Monarch Of The Glen!

Keep up the good work

Is this a joke? You used sounds from Counter-Strike for the guns?

reply

Yeah i have to agree is this a joke? Because this to me looks like the worst film ever made even worse than those hulk hogan flicks...

reply

It's not a joke per se, but the use of the CS sounds are meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek. The sound effects were specifically done for the CPL event. We will be redoing all of the sound effects, and this movie is by NO means complete from a sound perspective. The only sound we may keep as a 'nod' to the online game is the grenade sound, the one that goes down the stairwell.

This movie has a much deeper storyline, albeit action based, but the story is quite engaging. It has a little horror, a little CS, and a little Die Hard. Most of all the CPL talk is banter at the beginning of the movie. The gaming/CPL talk is over in about the first 10-15 minutes.

We took a chance with making a 'fun' trailer. A lot of gamers have smiled about it, but we've gotten other comments like yours. But make no mistake, we wanted to hear back from you. There will be a new trailer put together for the release of the movie.

Keep up the comments, messages, and questions. We want to hear it.

Thanks,

Dan.

I've been a fan for a while. Been trying to track down a DVD of The Keyman for a while now.

This isn't necessarily about Bloodlines, but about your possible future body of work.

You seem to be leaning into that direction with your latest films, and you have the right directional style, so I was wondering if you were ever going to do a dramatic contract killer film? Not a popcorn movie along the lines of Craven's Red Eye, but atmospheric and thematic ones, ones that are genuinely powerful, like Michael Mann's Collateral, or Spielberg's Munich? There's a lot of room in that genre for thought-provoking drama, and as it's been used only as grounds for a by-the-numbers thriller until recently, there's plenty of room for fresh scripts.

Cheers!

reply

Hi, thanks for the compliments. I have a bunch of ideas and scripts already written-- I've got a terrorist thriller that is set in Southeast Asia... I've got a sports drama (golf meets "Hoosiers"), I've got a post apocolyptic movie that I'm writing now (and may be the next one I shoot) that would be something like Red Dawn meets Mad Max. And I have about 6 ideas for movies involving the characters in Bloodlines.

I would love to make a strong dark drama like Munich. The Keyman is very much dark drama-- which is the problem. Dark Dramas are the hardest to sell. I am finally in negotiations for Keyman to be released domestically (it's available in different countries in the foreign market). I think I need some hits with my films to be able to do those stories. But when the hits happen-- I'll be ready. I don't think Speilberg could have doen Schindlers List or Munich before Jaws.

Thanks again, and please join the Bloodlines yahoo group http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/bloodlinesmovie/ for updates.

When you said you'd love to do a strong dark film "like Munich" did that include the concept of a contract killer? Sorry to sound edgy, but they fascinate me so much, and it is an almost completely new idea to cinema to have movies that delve into the consequences of their actions and the moral implications. You've done that so well in The Gunman, and your style really fleshes out the imposing superstructures of the city.

If you ever do make that Munich-type film after your hit (here's crossing my fingers for Bloodlines), may I make a suggestion? Film in a city that has a lot of skyscrapers that are well lit from the inside, and film at night as much as possible. I'm sure you saw how atmospherically that paid off in Collateral and Munich ;)

reply

Thank you very much. As far as the concept of "contract killer" I guess it depends on exactly how you define that. In Gunman, the Vigilante was certainly a killer but not contract. In the new Bloodlines, Vash is a mercenary who kills for his client... so in many respects you can call him a contract killer. But I wouldn't go as far as describe him as an assassin.

I do like the big city-- however, on lower budgets, it's hard to do. Michael Mann and Speilberg have a lot more money at their disposal than I do at this time.

BTW, Bloodlines is mostly night, interior of office building.

I just watched the trailer for Bloodlines, I really liked the thing that you did with the slow-motion bullets. It adds something to the movie and gives it a special touch.

reply

I just saw the trailer...only because I wanted to see what Yancy Butler was up to nowadays. But this trailer looked incredibly bad. Flying text to tell the story, horrible music, terrible mixing, and slow paced. Take a look at almost any trailer on Quicktime Movies and just copy one. Sorry to be so harsh, but it makes the movie look cheap.

reply

It looks much better than the prior one they had. Not too bad really.

Since Daniel Millican's excellent movie A PROMISE KEPT is available at amazon.de already (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002EHDZE/) there should be a pretty good chance that BLOODLINES will also be released in a German language version sooner or later.

hey daniel,
I was just wondering what type of camera did u guys use to film this? thanks.

We used "the beast"-- the Arri BL4 (35mm) for most of it. We did some speed ramping with a 435. Actually most of the movie was steadicam'd with that beast on it.

BTW, we are considering using the Panasonic HVX200 as a third or fourth camera in our next feature. In the next few weeks I'm going to do some tests with it next to 35mm.
