Better than Boyz N the Hood and Better Luck Tomorrow
For me this film hit home much more than Boyz. I think the characters were more nuanced and specific, less archetypes supposed to represent certain types than in Boyz. Also I think this film is unusual because it really shows the affects of violence that echo through the years far past the original act. Violence is not glamourized. Also, I liked how the film let you as audience member come to your own conclusions about what you see, not hit you over the head with a moral. I think the film-makers showed great compassion for the characters. Although I abhored the decisions many of the characters made I could understand the emotions and the situations which brought them to that point. The film shows something real, something that is often denied by communities who would prefer to show their best face to the world and by the general society in the US who have a very simplistic image of Asians.
