I watched this one on NF, just for something to pass the time, and was expecting a really crappy movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was much better than I expected.
There were some parts of this film that really did a great job amping up the tension. I was on the edge of my seat at certain points.
Just watched it on one of the movie channels I got(Cinemax something or Showtime), and it was surprisingly good. I'm usually pretty jade when it comes to modern horror. I think a lot of horror makers today totally don't get the good aspects of what made horror effective in the past, and they've resorted to cheap jump-scares, unlikable characters and pointless slasher/zombie crap. James Wan is one of the few modern horror movie makers I DO respect, but Sanchez really got my attention with this!
It's very retro in how it's handled. The lighting and cinematography even harkens back to 80s horror. Some of the characters start off as douches, but they grow on you and even, gasp, become developed to the point that you care for them and what happens to them. You don't see that enough in horror movies nowadays. It's mainly "disposable characters" that are there just for the sake of being killed, no development, no depth or likable qualities to establish them as "human beings", just as caricatures.
i gave this movie a solid 8/10 the first time i've seen it and i still hold that score after 4-5 more viewings over the years. i know movies are subjective but 5,7/10?! c'mon! i don't know what people expected and why they were disappointed.
