Need I say more?

Reaching a "rock bottom" state, like Justin did at the end of this film is very often what it takes before a genuine addict can find the clarity and will to rise above their addiction.

That's what they portrayed here. It showed how far even an addiction like this one can take someone.

reply

I wasn't talking about that. I agree with the rock-bottom concept and the movie was fairly interesting in portraying that part of his problem. I didn't like how it was left unresolved. He jumped in the pool...and then....WHAT? What happened next? It would be nice to know if he actually entered therapy, or if he died from sepsis from his wounds, or if he ran off to Hollywood to do porno movies, ANYTHING except NOTHING. I doubt there is a sequel in the works.

reply

If all you saw at the end was him jumping in the pool, then I think you missed the last few minutes. :P As part of his life flashed before him in the pool, he saw enough of what made him happy prior to the addiction to give him the strength and clarity to WANT to overcome. He found a reason to go on. That was evident as that will to live and overcome brought him up out of the water to gasp for air. To me, that is NOT unresolved. For therapy to work, the addict has to want it. He/she has to FIND that reason and that clarity. He found it there.

Sure they could have shown beyond that point how he and his family followed through. They chose not to and chose to end it on that dramatic moment.

But they don't need a sequel to show that he was ready to change. They showed that quite well. :)

JP

reply

I'm glad it was resolved for you. Really, I am. But it honestly wasn't for me. I have worked with recovering addicts and all types of mentally ill patients and I know that their first attempts at recovery rarely work well.

I wish they had chosen to tell a bit more about the outcome. I guess it's a compliment to the movie that I even care. :-)

reply

I wish they had too, as the point of the film was to bring awareness to this problem to parents. Showing the follow through beyond that moment would have been a good thing too.

But even though we can look back on it and say this would have been a little better. For a made for tv movie, I didn't think it was as bad as some people say on this board.

But I did understand what they tried to do with that ending, and I don't think it was the worst movie ending ever.

By the way, it is nice to meet you, Madam.

I agree that this was the worst movie ending ever!!

It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Pure anti-porn propaganda for the dumb! So, young people should not be interested in sex, they should go to church and live chaste wholesome lives? ;-)

When he fell in the pool at the end and it seemed like he was committing suicide, I suddenly felt like I had UNDERESTIMATED the movie and missed the point - of course his suicide would serve as a warning to overprotective mothers! The mother had pushed him over the edge by not allowing him to have normal teenage urges, and by putting too much pressure on him. Like "Dead Poets Society", in a way.

But then he decided to live, and I realized that I had not misunderstood things. The movie was just as stupid as I had thought at first. Luckily, I was fastforwarding it, so I only wasted an hour of my life instead of two.

reply

Yes, unfortunately you DID completely misunderstand this movie. It had nothing really to do with being "anti-porn". It wasn't the porn that was the problem with this young man. It was his ADDICTION to it. The addiction was not created by the mother, nor did she "push" him into it.

What this film did, was fairly accurately portray the symptoms that a person will go through if they become ADDICTED to porn. Not what happens when they view it. Not everyone who looks at porn will become addicted. Not everyone who looks at a LOT of porn will become addicted. It's a disease, and a very real one. And parents being able to see those symptoms and recognize them and get their child help, is what makes a film like this valuable.

The ending was dramatic and showed how far any addiction will often go before the addict finally does find that clarity and reason to try to overcome.

The film obviously went way over your head.

JP

reply

Well, I thought it was stupid, too!

Maybe it went over my head, but I choose to believe that YOU are reading way to much out of it...

reply

I knew a man who went through this very addiction. He wasn't a teen, but a young adult (in his 20s). Instead of 3 months as portrayed in this film, it took him about 4 months to reach a point where he almost took his life.

Choose to believe what you want. The film was made to make parents aware that this can happen. It can, whether or not you choose to believe or learn from it or not.

What a bright, lovely bunch of friends you must hang around. Anybody who has ever attended an average American high school for two weeks will tell you that trying to find a boy over the age of fourteen who doesn't regularly enjoy porn is about as sensible as trying to find a South Park episode without any offensive absurdities. Anything can turn into an addiction. People become addicted to TV, or just Internet in general, far more often than porn, I assure you. So why is it that soccer moms get their panties in a bunch over porn?

OH! OH! OH! LICK MY LEG! I'M ON FIIRE!

reply

This movie is trash, aimed at mindless morons who think sex addiction can ruin a life. Pure moral high ground propoganda...

reply

I like the ending. It ends by showing how life is usually unfair. It also gives you some room to determine what you think happened to Justin, while still showing that he messed his life up and had to take responsibility for his actions.

this is by far the worst movie I have seen in a long time

Maybe they want to make sure dumb people don't reproduce themselves?

It was his "rock bottom". When you essentially are overwhelmed to the point of giving up (potrayed by his attempting suicide in that scene), and your life passes before you, that is your rock bottom. That's what it took for him to see past the addiction and find the will to live. As I said, that is unfortunately often what it takes for an addict to find the strength and the reason to fight back and overcome.

I applaud all of you folks b/c I couldn't make it past the first 7 minutes.

Everything I just said above is my signature.

I think you all are missing the point. The pool was an obvious metaphor for a Virgin Vagina.

reply

It was okay, I didn't think he was dead though, because he started flopping around at the end.

Kid Nation && Degrassi are love.

reply

Haha. This movie was just terrible. Beginning, middle, ending. You want to see a good movie about addiction, see " Clean and Sober" with Michael Keaton. This movie was just a horribly written and acted pile of *beep*

reply

Good Movie.
Horrible Ending.

sad, sad, sad.

reply

@ Diana D....lol. At first the movie came off kind of boring and then I just said I'll stick with it since this is a Lifetime movie they don't usually get interesting untill in the middle. Anyways, the ending was horrible I was fine with that he learned his lesson and realize what cyber porn did to his life. When he jumped in the pool it's like WHAT, was he dead or did end up competing again on swim team.

reply

Finally, someone with an actual REASON for disliking the film. I rather liked the ending; I'm sure he didn't die. I think it just portrayed both his rock-bottom hit and his beginning relief, knowing what he finally had to do.

reply

First time I saw this movie, I thought he was trying to kill himself. The horrors of being a virgin, porn addiction, becoming a social outcast, and family issues was going to cause poor Justin to end his life. Maybe that will set up the sequel? And to be honest I want a sequel so badly.

Naw, didn't you see the look of release on his face, Josh? He was slowly coming back to himself. The film didn't want to portray him being driven to suicide, just the opposite.

reply

Or someone who actually has seen someone battle this addiction and genuinely has knowledge and experience with addicts.

It was a bad ending. If the movie wanted to help kids out there with the same problem they should had shown him getting help with his family. Going back to school. Being on the swim team again or Just asking for help at the end.

"Valentine's Day. Making single people feel like sh!t since 496 A.D."

People who are trying to get over an addiction just don't snap back into shape the next day or the next hour. It takes time. I disagree with your thoughts how the ending did not portray Justin getting help from his parents, going back to school, etc.. His mother especially knows the struggles he is going through but will be there for him. The relationship with Amy may be over but its for the best. Just because the character did not flat out say "I need help" does not mean he wasn't expressing it by his actions.
