I just watched the movie. It was ok I guess. I only speak english so had to watch with subtitles. During the scene in the bath-house between father & son, the father says (looking at his son's naked hotdog & dumplings), "you haven't gotten your balls fixed. You should do it now so they'll appreciate you later". What does this mean. Is this a reference to circumcision?
sharemost likely it is. i'm not sure about now but i know that even 10 years ago it was common for boys to get circumcised around 9-10 years of age.
i don't know why they do it later as opposed to when they're born since it seems like most boys in korea get circumcised but they do. and judging by how he said 'come to me if you're too embarrassed to tell your mom' i think it's talking about getting circumcised
My copy has the line "you haven't been circumsized" or something to that affect- it's much clearer that's what they're talking about.
shareThe text should have read "you haven't gotten circumcised yet?" as boys in Korea usually get circumcised around puberty and not when they are born. It is quite common and is the norm to be circumcised around this time there.
