Osoi Hito (Late Bloomer)

Excellent film,

balanced, athmospheric, dangerous, stylish - and with a message.

Respect for the whole crew behind this beauty, thank you!

See it asap!

jazzistheteacher,

I agree that the film is a true one-off. It was IN-TENSE and uniquely filmed, with the color-effects flashes, the stop-action shooting, the double-imaging and other "devices". I liked the film, but I can't think of who I would rec it to, just yet, to be honest with you. It WAS that odd.

Here is an interview with its director, that I found:

I guess the message of this film was that severely handicapped people can become so disengaged from life, that they can choose to randomly terminate others' lives. Or, that maybe they are not so different from the rest of us insofar as they too, have the potential to .... snap!

I liked that the lead character (Do palsied actors get much work in Japan, I wonder?) had "normal" friends, who cared to engage him in their lives. I thought that in Japan, the severely handicapped would be more ostracized than say, they are over here? Or, was this film NOT representative of society over there, but just rather suggestive of what it COULD be, were it to change?
