Please don't flame

The reason I intended to give this movie a chance to take 2 hours of my life (actually it was only 35 minutes) was my wish to try to understand and hopefully appreciate Indian cinema. All I have ever seen were few older movies of S.Ray.

Browsing through IMDB I came across this one and after seeing rating of 8.7 I concluded this must be the one which will open the doors of unknown and bring artistic enjoyment. Oh my how wrong I was! The only logical explanation for this rating of 8.7 is that most of 970 people who voted are Indian and their only venture outside Bolliwood production were Adam Sandler movies.

With this rating this movie would be ranked on 9th place on IMDB List of 250 best movies above Citizen Cane, Goodfellas of Psycho! I am really not in a mood to review and criticize because there is simply nothing that I find worth remembering from this painful experience. My only hope is that there is a lot of Hindu who like me find this movie as is -- plain stupid, with abundance of kitsch and cheesy music.

"who voted are Indian and their only venture outside Bolliwood production were Adam Sandler movies."'

now that was unnecessary..you didn't like the film ok but don't say anything abt others.. I have seen movies frm almost every cinema (american, korean, japanese, chinese, arabic, indian etc) but i still love Lage Raho Munnabhai.. This is one of the best films i have seen in recent times..

Everything frm the performances(especially Sanjay dutt) to the direction rocked!!!

I 2nd what sheriff718 said about the movie. Also I quite did not understand what kinda of specific "Hindu" would dislike this movie.

You're a narrow minded fellow aren't ya?

While I could argue that Lage Raho Munnabhai deserves an 8.7 more than The Two Towers does, I don't see the point. IMDB ratings are a measure of popularity. As of this writing, Borat is #149 and Wild Strawberries is #152. I don't believe the IASF has claimed responsibility yet.

But you have a right to your opinion. Considering that the scope of this film is social commentary rather than artistic expression, I personally thought it was a winner. The target audience of Bollywood movies is a rather diverse bunch. The cheesy music you mention is what goes with the hazy lyrics that you don't understand, even if you read the translation. Ignorance is bliss.

Besides, there are no less than 37 Hindi movies with at least 50 votes and an average rating of 9.0 or more (Browse / By Language / Hindi / By Average Vote), so you're really barking up the wrong thread. Since you haven't mentioned any of your favourite movies (I'm assuming if you liked Citizen Kane, you'd at least spell it correctly), it won't be easy to recommend Indian movies you might appreciate more.

I have shown Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai to many of my british friends and they all loved it, so i see no point in saying that it is only liked by a bunch of community!

Munnabhai rocks and deserves the ratings it has.. i hope it gets more votes and enters Top250 list!!!

I am not surprised that you were not happy with this movie. For a first mainstream Indian movie for a non Indian (that too with expectations of Ray like ones!!). Maybe you should know about some things about mainstream Indian movies and culture before trying to critique/appreciate bollywood movies. And you should keep in mind that almost all Indian movies are musicals. For a Indian movie buff or one who knows about present day India, this movie is definitely a very good one and I think it deserves the rating it has got from viewers.

Regarding the ranking I think for an Indian, LRMB is as good as Goodfellas (Im sure you wont agree here and thats where our cultures differ). I can bring you a list of bollywood oldies which are lot better in emotional content compared to Citizen Kane (I should agree that CK is very good in its technical aspects and maybe leagues ahead). I cant comment on Psycho as I have not seen it.

Maybe you can post back with a small list of hollywood movies you like, Im sure there are quite a few Indian movie buffs here who can suggest you some good Indian ones for your taste (to get started (and if you are interested)). But you cant escape the music and some extra fluff in bollywood movies.

I just came to this thread from a flame war between Goodfellas fans and Dances With Wolves fans. I think DWW can easily communicate well with any one who knows english and bit of American history. For me Goodfellas is just one more Italian mafia based movie (a good one though) but cant be compared with DWW. Maybe as an Indian I am not able to appreciate it (Goodfellas) as I am as ignorant about how much the Italian mafia thing is into American way of thinking as your ignorance about the erosion of Gandhian principles in our country.

Your "Adam Sandler" statement seems to speak lengths about your ignorance and canning every one in "one size fits all" kind of thing (I can give such analogies the other way, but I will refrain from it). And I have no clue on what you are trying to tell in your last sentence and usage of "Hindu" there.

i feel you missed the point of the movie.
it is a rare attempt to create a movie that has social commentry brought out through comedy(which is a great form of public entertainment ).
firstly, in my opinion you are the kind of audience who goes to a movie to see some deep logic in it.
this film was not made with you as the target audience.
i will still see this movie better than GANDHI, and shyam benegal's THE MAKING OF THE MAHATMA, even above this film.
you are a very devout hindu, and i respect that, but htat does not mean that other hindus like me will appreciate all the very same genres you do.
you see individual audiences, but movies are made with the masses in mind.
and personally i feel that there is nothing wrong in putting this movie in he imdb top 250 list.(since the list is goverened by peoples choice anyways. )

Dude....i really hope that you dont understand indian cinema....coz ppl like you dont deserve to understand or appreciate it. You keep sticking your hollywood movies...whereas we indians get to "understand and appreciate" both.

It's not a bad movie but I do agree with you on the fact that it does not deserves to be anywhere close to the top 250..... but then again there are some other movies in top 250 list which I dont like so it's all upto choices and likings.
