Hermes's actress, not so great

I randomly picked up train man (manga) while killing some time in a barnes and noble. after reading 2 volumes of it i noticed an ad for the movie.

the movie i thought hit everything dead on, excpet for 2 things
i thought train man was MADDDD nerdy. however, i read the manga, and nerds in manga usually end up looing cooler than they really should. i also never met a ajpense nerd, so i have no idea how they really act and if they do whip out palm pilots or sony clies for everyday convo's.

my major beef withthis movie was the casting for hermes.
first of all, i htoht the woman looked too old. on top of that, she sucked.
her chrctr was so formal the whole time that he almost killed the movie. i htink the best parts in the omvie are when she snot in it.

its not liek the actress can't act either. the actress who played hermes was in the original ring movies.

its clear she can act. but i think she totally wasnt right for hermes. they needed someone more energetic.

open to criticism and SHTUFF

Are you stupid? She's not the actress in Ringu. Get your facts straight before you start bashing.
Your comments are mindless bashing which I don't think even deserves to be considered an opinion.

....2nd name.

but how about we try not to be such a prick with our posts?

and i wasnt bashing

i was wondeirng if anyone else thought if she was good or not.

but i guess you missed that part.

Her "lack of personality" was done on purpose...

*** SPOILER ********

When the movie ends, we see that the whole movie was nothing more than a daydream by Densha. He doesn't know her personally, therefore, wouldn't know her personality except for what he must've witnessed from her on the tram. So, that's how she was projected during his daydream.

we take our horrible mutilations seriously in these parts

Dude, do you realize that you replied to my post??

The person you meant to reply to will probably never read your witty response.

Are you sure it was a daydream? Maybe it was just to show a coincidence that the ticket was Hermes' and not the little girl's?

And what about the people that helped him over the internet? They showed them "moving on".

reply

It was pretty obvious that the lady didn't know him in any way, by her lack of reaction to his even being on the train. It was also clear that he had been asleep and was snapped awake. 2+2.

It was to show that the authenticity of the true story the movie's based on is in question.

That's not the impression I got at all from that scene. Also, given the backstory surrounding this movie, I find it very hard to believe that your interpretation is the one the filmmakers intended.

Going on the basis that it was all a dream, then Train_Man didn't realize it was Hermes' tag until the very end of the fantasy. So why would he have fantasized about her when he didn't even notice her on the train at that point?

To me, that scene was just indicative of Train_Man being so closed off from everyone around him as well as showing that the two missed their first opportunity for meeting each other because he didn't have the courage to speak up.

It's an interesting interpretation, though, and kudos for it. But I have to respectfully disagree.

Spot on, that's what i felt pretty much also. you just worded it and looked at it in much more depth and perception then i did.

reply

Well excuse you, lilnammer_69, but YOU are the stupid one. YES she was in the second Ringu movie. You should get YOUR facts straight before calling other people "stupid," you idiot.
ANYWAY -
Back to the original post: I think I see what you're saying ammar_haq, but the formality of her character was done that way so that she could be a complete contrast from the nerdy Densha otoko guy. Hermes may not have been my favorite character and maybe the people who made the movie exaggerated a bit with how she should have acted, but I still Miki Nakatani was suited for the role. I don't know, that's just my opinion :T

reply

Personally, I thought she did a great job. She was formal, yes, but I don't see how that's a bad thing. It's just a different portrayal from the way women are usually portrayed in romantic comedies. As far as looking too old, I didn't get that at all. She's not supermodel material, but again, I think that's good. It made her seem more approachable.

reply

I think it was a coup that they got the actual actress that Densha said that the woman loooked like.

reply

They cast Miki Nakatani for this part specifically because in the book/internet posts, that was Densha's answer when the posters are grilling him on what celebrity Hermes looks like.

So there is a point to it.

If you think Densha was uber-nerdy in the movie, watch the TV series. OMG. Series!Densha is the biggest nerd I've ever seen. And he's annoying.

The Hermes actress did an OK job, but I'm sure they only chose her because that's who the real-life Densha said she looked like. She isn't that pretty, though; I thought the actress who played her in the series was far more beautiful. Formality is a huge part of Hermes's character in general, since she acts just the same in the series.

reply

I think that it wouldn't make any sense for the girl to be energetic in any way.

To me the whole point of her character is that she is a fragile romantic, just like most Otaku are.
She is a mirror image of the boy, but in her case her mind is ruled by her place in her established wealthy family rather than pop culture escapism.

If she was any different it would be quite unlikely for her to find anything adorable in this seemingly pathetic loser.

I was thinking I'd like to see the actress who played the nurse in the lead role.
