A great zombie film for TRUE zombiphiles, 23 May 2005

Author: nflames from United States

It's so much easier to pick out all the bad things in a film and write a really crappy review. Trust me, I've written my share of crappy reviews. However Dead Life was not one of them. Dead Life IS in fact shot on 8mm, and it looks grainy and low quality and you know what? That's a good thing. The film quality adds to its gritty retro feel. The effects are MUCH better than what you see in indie. Amateur acting, gee that's funny given that the actors are...wait for it...AMATEURS! I will concede that Dead Life isn't for everyone. If your true love is stupid teens and tired horror cliché's then steer clear. If your love for zombies is insatiable then you could do a whole helluva lot worse than Dead Life. At least the dude on the cover is IN the movie, which can't really be said for a lot of independent horror these days. Don't base your judgment solely on what's written here at IMDb, if you're a zombiephile do a search, you'll find plenty of reviews singing the praises of Dead Life.

Man, was i glad when i saw that review. I first thought i was maybe the only one human being (except for the Dead Life crew) that actually LOVED and ADORED that movie!

Does anyone else feel the same way? (And seriously, no *beep* whining or complaining about this movie, there are tons of other topics where you can complain how *beep* much you want.)

Wait a minute...so you're not a member of the movie crew or cast and still praise this film? It's probably THE worst zombie film I've ever seen and I've seen a lot and even own 60+ of them on dvd (and another 20-30 pseudo-zombie movies) and have my copies of the 'Zombie Encyclopedia', 'Eaten Alive!: Italian Cannibal and Zombie Movies' and 'Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci'. "TRUE zombiephiles"? Don't make me laugh. My ex-girlfriend is a zombie fanatic. I've even been a background extra in a low-budget zombie short (student fanfilm) that my friend assisted with makeup on. Haven't seen that finished 20 min or so movie, but I'd be surprised if it ever makes it onto imdb. I wasn't all that impressed with what I could see of it. I know a bit about zombie movies -- more than enough to know that DL sucked.

Day of the Dead 2: Contagium gives DL a run for its money in the awfulness department, though they made a terrible movie with more resources. Next would probably be RotLD4: Necropolis (haven't seen RotLD5: Rave from the Grave yet). Even Le Lac de Morts Vivants (Zombie Lake) had more redeeming qualities and even Children of the Dead was more entertaining despite its own lameness. DL makes Feeding the Masses look like the Citizen Kane of low budget zombie movies by comparison. Also overrated in the backyard zombie genre: Stink of Flesh. Dead Life was an insult to zombie movies. Those equally budgetless kids from Argentina with a VHS camcorder and bad makeup effects made much better movies in the Plaga Zombie series even with the silly wrestler subplot.

No complaining in this topic? Sorry, I forgot this topic gets to be a dictatorship. Plus, if you try to dictate no negative comments, this topic will have only the original post and possibly posts from the filmmakers asking which address to send the $5 check to for promoting this garbage. I seriously can't think of a single positive thing to say about this movie and I love the zombie genre.

As you seem like somewhat of an expert... and being a huge zombie fan myself... I would be most greatful if you could tell me... out of the low-budget zombie movies you mentioned, and well, any others that you can think of...

Which feature IMO "classic zombies" I mean by this Romero "dawn of the dead" style zombies... i.e. re-animated dead people, not infected, for whatever reason... SLOW moving, and any death causes re-activation... not just being bitten...

Most greatful thanks.

Dude, worst zombie movie ever has gotta be Deadlands: The Rising. Like you, I've seen a crapton of zombie flicks, and that's the one I compare all others to as the worst. After that, probably The Rising Dead, Leben Tod: Night of the Dead, Zombie Bloodbath and Living Dead Lock Up 2 are few of my personal worst.

I actually enjoyed Plaga Zombie and will probably watch it again sometime (most zombie flicks are hardly worth a second viewing) and thought Stink of Flesh at least had an interesting idea, even if the execution of said idea left something to be desired.

I've heard Day of the Dead 2: Contagium, Children of the Living Dead, Zombie Lake, and the latter ROTLD films are all garbage, so I haven't seen any of them. Maybe someday I will when I've exhausted all other zombie flick possibilities.

Oh, I've looked for Feeding the Masses but can't seem to find it, so it's on my Amazon wishlist (along with a few other hard-to-download zombie flicks, and those zombie books you mentioned). Any other suggestions you might give me, from a self-proclaimed zombie expert?

Also check out the list of zombie films on Wikipedia if ya want, maybe you can add something to the list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_zombie_movies

ZOMBIE NATION. ZOMBIE STRIPPERS. ZOMBIEZ. ZOMBIE CHRONICLES. Those are bad zombie films.

I dug it, it most certainly had its flaws (why'd the zombies randomly shake their heads like a Tool video? Why'd it randomly go black-and-white?), but I liked the grainy 8mm format. The dude fu cking the zombie chick while she's feasting was great, and then her biting his dick off was even better. Would've been cool if there were more over-the-top shocking scenes like that, rather than some of the pointless scenes that seemed to serve no other purpose other than as a vehicle to make you listen to the soundtrack. I'm sure I'll never watch Dead Life again, and it'll collect dust on my DVD rack next to Forever Dead and Bone Sickness.

Still, although it was scraping the bottom of the zombie-movie barrel, it's still not the worst zombie flick I've ever seen, and certainly not the lowest one I've rated: 4/10 from me.
