instrument question

They show the featured violin(?) during the Rohan piece, and it's beautiful! It's like no other violin I've seen before--the carvings on it are utterly exquisite. Does anyone know if this is just a beautifully-carved violin, or is it some special instrument? I'm just curious... it doesn't really sound like the other violins, either.
