Does George know what he is doing ?

Please anyone, how long do you think this guy is gonna last on this so-called show ?

reply

I love this show.

I think it'll last because it speaks to our generation about things we want to know about. And he doesn't dumb it down.

Plus, seriously, he's George. He can pretty much do no wrong. Except "The One".

reply

I agree, his jokes are horrible and his interviewing skills are poor and his lack of confidence for this program shows through in his body language and his attempt to try too hard to prove himself. It looks like he tries to cover it up by making an effort to make it look natural, but the effort is what I see and not intended natural look.

It was a real shame for me, I think George is great, he did an AWESOME job as the Advocate for Tommy Douglas as greatest Canadian, I still think he is great, but this show is NOT a good fit for him.

reply

Sorry to disagree but I think this show is one of the best out there right now.

He interviews a wide variety of people and he asks real questions. No, he's not the typical "What's your favourite colour?" interviewer. He's not afraid to state the obvious or to ask the hard questions. I think George knows EXACTLY what he is doing. I think he provides a fast-paced and quick-witted show for an intelligent audience.

reply

The Hour is terrible just terrible.

reply

Yup, so terrible it has lasted 8 seasons and counting. A relaxed interview based show with a young interesting host with a dash of politics and current events. How could that last?

reply

Surprisingly, it has lasted 2 plus years. Way too long.

He tries way too hard... and it is soooo not entertaining.

This is the one show I feel I can trust. George is an intelligent easy going person. This show isn't in your face entertainment but it is informative and more fun than Peter Lamesbridge. (Yes I do write for the Hour). It is made by an older generation for a younger one so it will be slightly lame. The writers aren't that funny, but I mean c'mon. It's CBC. Have you ever seen Air Farce? Pure *beep* George is a good quality guy who asks great questions and I feel as though I can trust him and that he would always do his best to report the truth. He wouldn't dumb things down or censor important information. It is infinetly better than any other youth oriented news. I hope it keeps being made and more people get into it. It's so much better for you than anything else on at 6:00. It's TV that doesn't make you that much stupider.

This show has really had a great impact on me. When I was 13 (usually a time when kids start paying attention to the news and the world they live in) and 9/11 happened, I made a conscious decision to never listen to the news because in my 13 year old mind, the world was a just a big scary place and I didn't want to know what was going on in it. Then when my favourite VJ left MuchMusic (which has completely gone down hill since his departure) I saw an ad on T.V. that he was doing a new show on CBC Newsworld called "The Hour". I initially watched it for George, but from the first episode I was hooked. The show really made me aware, and I realised that as a person in this world (and especially being a young person) I have a responsibility to be informed about the world I live in. The Hour delivers the news in a fast, "bullet-point" way so that you get the facts quickly. After watching a show, sometimes I'm so intrigued about a certain topic or on a certain guest (such as Ishmael Beah ... excellent interview!) that I'll look it up on the internet afterwards to learn more.

Even seeing as many of the things that are happening in the world today are repercussions of past events, the segments "The Set-up" and "The Bio" also provide the background information you need to know to get a better understanding of the current events.

This show is QUALITY! If you don't like it, if it's not your thing, that's fine. But this show has proven to be successful and it's recent move to the main CBC network and the podcasting and youtube website have made this News/Talk show more accessbile to other Canadians and the rest of the world. My hat's off to George, the staff on the show and the CBC for creating a unique, informative, and entertaining program!

Had it a hospitable host it could be enticing. This George Stroumboulopoulos guy isn’t funny but keeps shoving out unspeakable attempts at humor. He’s a dissembler. An intolerable phony. What’s he trying to be tonight? A musician, an actor, an economist, or a politician. Maybe a trendy manhattanite? Give it up poncho.

Nicely produced show, if we forego the pitiful misfires at comedy.

I know what you mean...I remember watching MuchMusic on 9/11 becuase the news was just beating the story, and it was emotionally draining. So I cheered up by watching Much, then the 2 min "news" clip (i forgot what its called) showed and George, instead of giving us celebrity news, he says (to paraphrase) "There are more important things happening than celebrity news, turn the channel watch teh news, get informed."...

I fell in love with him rigth after that, to have that much charisma to shake the viewers out of apathy and get them informed.

Personally I love this show. It gives me the news without shoving it down my throat. I hope this show lasts a long time, I love it. I find George funny, charismatic and loves what he does. If you have ever seen his interview with June Callwood, its absolutely amazing, she chose him to do her interview(which turned out to be her last) and with good reason. I think still only being 14 I like learning about politics, religion and world news but I also like to hear about the entertainment industry which this show gives both equally. Plus George has great taste in music.

I mention it all the time on these boards but I'll mention it again. The Hour replaced "Counterspin" which was a truly edgy, intelligent youth oriented show which didn't patronize its audience. George is well-meaning but he's the ultimate hipster. He seems to just be parroting what he's heard before. Nothing he says is particularly interesting or meaningful. It's all about image and not at all about action.

Hipsters generally wear Converse shoes, cool retro vintage clothes, talk about politics of which they know nothing and will likely sell-out before anyone else.

i think that George is an excellent host. I find that his interviews are very entertaining because he asks the important questions, and has a laid back fun time with his guests. He has great guests to.

I think that its probably the best show on tv because its the only show that i look forward to watching on TV now because beyond reality shows and dramas that are completely fictional The Hour is the only real world show i can watch these days.

it's a cbc show and therefore should be rated on a curve. I mean what are you comparing it to (that isn't news, or a news magazine)? I understand there was a day that cbc aired the news commercial free. The idea no doubt being a public broadcaster ought to be about straight non-editorialized news. Again, I like "The National", "The Fifth Estate", and show like "The Passionate Eye" which airs current documentaries. Anything and everything else they air however ought not to have ever seen the light of day. I'm mean, have you ever seen "The Royal Canadian Air Farce"? I occasionally stop at this show and just stare in utter amazement that it exists. Hollywood puts out a lot of crap but nothing they (or anybody) could produce could possibly rival this trash. That it has survived this many years is a clear indication that there is something deeply, deeply wrong going on at our publicly owned corporation.

reply

I like the host but this show is terrible especially the skits.

THIS IS MY RIFLE. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS LIKE IT BUT THIS ONE IS MINE.

reply

I agree with you, nothing wrong with George as a host but this show is awful. Lame news, lame jokes, not very informative, bad "celebrity" interviews.

reply

I disagree completely. I find the Hour extremely informative and engaging. The jokes aren't anything special, though the've gotten much better as the show has progressed through the years. The skits remain the worse part about the show. I take them as an extended commercial.

The point of the hour isn't to be funny though. It's a talk/news show, it's one of the best around (It's not just me that says that either. Some of Georges biggest fans are his guests).

I've always been a fan or Georges since I can remember watching much music as a kid, and that certainly affects my judgment of the show. Personally, I think George speaks with sincerity, Intrigue and passion which makes him a great host, but that's not why I watch the show almost every night it's on. I watch the show because of the interviews.

Say what ever you want about George or the jokes, but the interviews are some of the best I've ever seen. The Hour's guests know that they have a longer time to talk, they can say whatever they want and that George and people watching will take them seriously and hear what the have to say. They have the time and confidence to really describe what they want to get across, and they can rely on George to help them out. he's a very intuitive guy and he knows how to keep a conversation going and when to move it in a new direction. And that's the key point about his interviews... They're Conversations. Conversations with interesting guests that have something to say, and not just something to promote.

if it weren't for movies, I'd have no place in society

reply

I'm sorry to break it to you, troll, but George is there to stay. He's considered one of the best on CBC and has had only positive feedback from the people he's interviewed.

In my humble opinion, George is perhaps one of the greatest interviewers of our time, even beyond Letterman or Leno... however, Conan is a very close 2nd. But George asks more questions about the individual rather than what film the individual is trying to promote which gives the viewer a higher quality interview.

reply

You're an idiot. The OP is not a troll, just because they don't like George.

Weird topic.

Who do you think gives "good" interviews?

The interviews are in depth.. he asks actual questions. Which get the Guests involved. Plus he doesn't just interview "celebrities" .. Kind of confused as to which show you guys are watching..

+Only a fool believes he is dreaming, Before he wakes up.+

reply

The only reason he's "lasted" is because he's on the CBC, any other network and they would have kicked him to the curb. The CBC is known for allowing shows to "last" a long time even if they are awful. How about another show that has "lasted" thanks to on our wasted tax dollars like "This 22 Minutes Feels Like an Hour" and other non-funny drivel... the CBC is only good for Hockey Night in Canada and Don Cherry, beyond that their shows are dumb, unfunny and their news is biased and immature.
