Disappointing

I got the game expecting something similar to Morrowind but this is nothing like. You are very much led down a path, their are so many invisible walls you can't really deviate at all. Their are far to many long and boring talking scenes which add little to the story or characters. The combat system is abysmally thin, you basically just use 2 buttons. Can anyone recommend an xbox rpg which is like morrowind or just a good rpg?

Well, there's the smartass answer of Oblivion.... (SCNR)
There's Fable, that's a bit more free ranged but you still have a story you kind of have to follow... If you didn't like Jade Empire I doubt you'd like KOTOR...
But I assume you mean lesser known RPGs, which I'm sure someone else could give you.

I quite enjoyed the first KOTOR. In Jade empire im at the bit where the village has just burned down, do things gets any more interesting from here in?

Last film I looked at: Stroszek - 9/10

Uh... yeah... they do, cripes man you haven't even met the rest of your team yet... There's a lot left of the game, I mean, it's a bit soon to be making assumptions, isn't it?

RPG's as free-range as the Elder Scrolls series are actually quite rare. Most nowdays have the overlying plot that you can't get too far without completing (Best free-range RPG I've played was Fallout, but even in that, you had to complete at least your original mission in a certain timeframe or you'd lose cos the Vault would run out of water, and then after that you had to head off to work on finishing the game.)

Jade Empire is much closer to KOTOR than any other game I can think of, other than the reworking of the combat system to accomodate realtime combat and the complete discarding of the D20 system (I personally wouldn't have minded if they'd continued to use the d20 ruleset they borrowed from WOTC for the KOTOR games and used it for the basis of Jade Empire). This is mainly because the games have the same design group, so they are VERY similar. Both games have the long dialogue scenes, both have the drawn out initial mission before you get a little freedom to do what you want (although Jade Empire, it seems, has less freedom after this point. I consider the freedom being gained from the point you get the dragonfly and the wind map, at which point there's only two places you can really go... the Imperial City, and back to Tien's Landing again. Unlike KOTOR where once you get off Taris and complete the level on Dantooine, you're free to travel back and forth from several completely different planets, all with a large selection of sub-quests and different items for sale. I'll also note that KOTOR2 suffered from a similar problem, because the opening section was far too long and drawn out, and then when you finally get the heck out of it, you STILL don't have your lightsaber and no freedom until you complete ANOTHER long drawn out section...), and have the large open-looking spaces that are actually quite linear because there's only specific points linking one area to the next, and only certain things in each area to interact with.

I finished the game a few days ago, and while I enjoyed the game, I don't feel it lived up to KOTOR, or even Fable. The stunning twist will knock you around a bit though, I won't say what happens, but I'll say that at one point I figured I'd finished the game when suddenly BAM I'm stuck playing it even longer :P

yeah, keep playing the game. trust me. it gets better. a lot better actually. the village part is just a tutorial to get you started. but you'll be come across such a diverse field of action/story/plot/areas. and it's okay if you don't like it. i enjoyed it mostly because i admire asian history/culture and folklore. and a game with a good story is always enticing to me. like the final fantasy series. there's a good set of games to free roam around in.

The Hitokiri is untouchable.

well morrowind is the rpg that every one loves to compare every thing to, because of its sheer size, nothing will beat the elder scrolls series, i have only played no 3 and seen s/s from oblivion.

but i would recommend knights of the old republic 1 or 2 made by bioware as well, there are no other rpgs like morrowind in that capacity.

the thing with morrowind it is that it is too big and fierce that it scares off first time players as they are not limited to anything at all, so they can go any where at anytime and the only thing that limits you is your level

Morrowind and the Elder Scrolls series is not as great as people think, Morrowind has the worst PC and X-Box graphics for 2002 plus the gameplay is crap. RPGs should not do 1st person like the Elder Scrolls since its combat is so lame and uninspired, it might be big but its BS on how long it takes to travel especially in the begining of the game. Morrowind doesn't scare people off with how free roam it is, its the bad gameplay of combat and the lame lvling system to gain skills and lvl up.

I would take KOTOR 1&2, Jade Empire, or Fable:The Lost Chapters over The Elder Scrolls series or a game like it any day and I know many other people who would agree.

I agree. Morrowind may have been more open ended, but the combat system was awful. I mean, you couldn't even do anything and there was no way to display if the fight was in your favor (ie, no health bar on the enemy). Really, Morrowind is an overrated game.

Well, a good rpg would be Neverwinter Nights, also by BioWare. It's pretty open ended, though you have a fair share of quests to complete. It also has awesome online play. However, it's a PC game, so unless you can only get your rpg fix through consoles, I definitely reccommend it.

reply

Yeah...Check out Fable: The Lost Chapters. It is a great RPG. The Bard's Tale is decent as far as RPG....it has some witty humor to it.

I second the Neverwinter Nights rec. Yes, it is a PC game, but it offers a lot of freedom. The gameplay and combat is classic D&D style, there's a lot of lore in the game (through item names/histories and random books you can loot), it's easy to play, and it keeps your interest.

The main plot is interesting and absorbing as well. So even though you can go anywhere and do a lot of things, you'll still want to work through storyline. And while the game does progress in stages, during each stage you can explore, so you're not confined to just one forward motion.

The online play is also fun. a lot of users make their own modules, so the game can still be interesting even after you complete the first person campaign.

Baldure's Gate I and II are great games if you look past the graphics which are ugly compared to graphics nowadays.
Star WaArs KotOr is great too and it's very similar to Jade Empire except for the fact that it's set in the Star Wars universe and the different battle system.

reply

You're a goddamned retard if you thought the game would be anything like Morrowind, honestly.

Do some research next time, dumbass.

This is an action-RPG with heavy emphasis on story. You wouldn't buy a third person shooter and say it was disappointing because it wasn't a first person shooter, would you?

P.S. You say that there are far too many long and boring talking scenes... I enjoy the Elder Scrolls series, but don't you think that's kind of hypocritical to say when considering that in Morrowind, asking a guard where a particular building is might yield 2 paragraphs of worthless text?

reply

For all that loves RPG on PC, BG II is the game to play in my oppinion or any other game from Bioware for that matter.

reply

If you dont like the game dont look up the forums just to badmouth it. Great. Now I gotta go through all the trouble of hiring assassins. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH THEY CHARGE?!

reply

Just get the free ones, sure, they usually botch the job and you have to pre-order the assassination six months prior, but hey... It's free.
