Amazing production design!

I'd never heard of this film - totally missed it when it came out 4 years ago - and then happened to find it while channel surfing tonight.

Wow. The production design was truly amazing - not only were the sets & props absolutely spot-on accurate, the costuming VERY good - including lots of Spanish regional dress variations, but the lighting and composition of some of the shots was spectacular - in many cases, the scenes were lit to look like actual Goya paintings.

OK - it was a work of fiction, not a documentary -- other than Goya, the protagonists didn't exist in real life and there's quite a bit of artistic license taken with history. However, the accuracy of the material culture, for an era that's very seldom represented on screen really blew me away. GREAT job!

I do historical film work for a living - mostly TV documentaries (History, Discovery, etc) and the occasional low to mid budget SAG indie, so I'm in a position to appreciate what a fine piece of work this film represents. Wow again. Wish I'd been part of this.

I just don't get why so many people are negative about this film. Javier is an amazing actor - reminiscent of a young Oliver Reed in Ken Russell's "The Devils" (one of my favorite films BTW)

The Devil's is my favorite film ever. This took so much(steal might be a better word)from Ken Russell's masterpiece that I can not embrace it as you. Even dialogue was taken. Not nearly as powerful as THE DEVIL'S.

Yup, "The Devils" was my first thought as well...
