I Must Be Crazy or Something, But I Thought This Movie was Amazing

I just watched it on On Demand for the first time

I had seen the trailer years ago, but didn't pay much attention to it. I didn't know much about the plot going in, I assumed it would be a generic action like Taken or Mission:Impossible where the plot is kind of irrelevant. I only decided to watch it 'cause of Denzel

But damn, I loved it. I thought the character was badass, the dialogue was great, and the story had heart. The only complaint I would have is that he was definitely OP. He only really struggled briefly in one scene near the end where he was wrestling with some thug on the floor. In that sense, this sort of falls outside of the Action genre. But I still loved it, and was surprised when I saw in the credits that it was directed by Fuqua, since I thought that he had lost the ability to make good movies.

But it has a mediocre RT score and doesn't seem like it received much fanfare. I guess maybe I just have shitty taste or something, because I felt like I saw a classic of the crime genre and I have seen a shit ton of crime movies

I signed up just to say that I thought the same. It’s a genre film, but to me a definite standout in the genre. Some very impressive directing with tense scenes that Fuqua let develop at a slower pace than most of these types of films allow. Denzel brought some incredible gravitas to McColl. There were a couple of really nice scenes with Denzel and David Harbour. I liked the film so well that after finishing it I immediately bought and watched the sequel on demand.
