The series from the 80's starred Edward Woodward as a retired CIA type who served people to help them get out of trouble. Stalkers, kidnappers and things that were out of the range of the police were his specialty.

McCall was an English gentlemen. Always well dressed, drove his Jaguar and had a network of people that he would call on to help get things done.

The show always showed an ad in the newspaper (which is what is seen on his laptop at the end of the movie) In some fashion the movie is almost a prequel to the TV show setting as McCall was already involved in this work.

There were no indications in the show that McCall was OCD and he sure didn't fight like the movie but the show was very popular for several years.

I grew up watching that show, but I had forgotten about the ad in the newspaper.

I just threw up a little in my mouth.

reply

they never once say he is former CIA they always refer to the government organization he worked for as the Agency or the company even though those are nicknames for the CIA it is just as likely that he simply worked for an unknown agency

> Sequel, dummy !!! Have you never watched the Equalizer TV Show ?

Did this movie make enough that anyone would bother with a sequel? I mean, I liked the movie, but it really didn't jump out as the start of a franchise. I've seen the TV show and I stopped watching after a couple of seasons since they just repeated the same plots over and over. I can't see that a series of movies can avoid that either.

> Why not .

Well, because sequels to moderately performing movies rarely make much money. People who didn't see the first won't watch the second and people who watched the first but didn't like it won't watch either. It just starts off with two strikes against it.

Eh. I do it my way. That way I can double or triple indent complicated complicated discussions.

This makes me wonder why a there was a second 'Jack Reacher' film (which I enjoyed, but not as much as the first...)

reply

yes it in fact did make enough money. it had a budget of 55 million and made 192,300,000 thats over 3 times the budget

reply

Screamed sequal to me. I wish. I loved this movie and thought it was worthy of a repeat.

I also noticed the book on the table is Invisible Man. It was written by Ralph Ellison back in the 50s. I think that had some meaning. That kind of describes Denzel's character in the movie. No one knew who he was at first and he was kind of invisible in a way. That's just what I took from it.

Great movie!

The final shot almost looked like the painting, "Nighthawks".

All it means is he's decided not to just go back to being a regular joe, he broke his promise and now he's going to keep being that guy.

reply

It's to show that he's found his purpose in life. It also serves as a segway into the inevitable sequel.

reply

A reference to the television serie, as others pointed out. But also a reference to Edward Hopper's famous painting.

reply

It's how the original series was based.

which they soon forgot for part 2.
