These people seemed to be living in a time warp

I would have thought this story was taking place in the 1980s, based on the cars and lack of cell phones. But then I heard the music that Terry was blasting in certain scenes and realized that it had to be present time, relative to when the movie was made. The parents spoke with accents, showing that they were immigrants. Generally there are no modern day white, European immigrants new to America. All the "Irish" living in present day Boston are descendants from Irish immigrants 3 or 4 generations past. With the way that the family was making their daughter follow through with her unwed pregnancy, and the way they were expecting Cole to become a priest, it was like they were living in a 1950s mindset.

Furthermore, the family car was a mid-1980s Chevy station-wagon, and there was no mention of the internet and/or anyone using computers. With that said, these people and their acquaintances seemed to be lost in 2007! I watched this movie a few nights ago with "The Boondock Saints". This and the latter being about Irish people living in contemporary Boston. I like to have movie themes if possible. Obviously "Black Irish" is much more somber in tone. And I have one more question. Boston is a major, inner city. Are there any white, Euro-Americans living in that city still, as this movie depicts? I ask this because nowadays most major, inner cities are predominantly populated by Afro-Americans.

I thought the same, until I read the story was written about 30 years ago, so that would fit your time era.

Also to your point that there are no new Irish, oh yes there is. A different type, and time, though. My sister is married to an Irish man (we are 2nd generation Irish), from Dublin. He was naturalized in 1990. He brought a whole slew of his family later, and they're still coming. There are pubs and restaurants all over Boston and surrounding areas that are more than happy to hire the Irish to authenticate their pubs and restaurants. Her husband, and cousins, brothers, their kids, etc., too worked in the pubs or restaurants for a long while until they settled in.
