The idea just didn't work
Claiming to be a "dramatic-documentary-musical", it fails on all three counts. The acting is watery and unimportant, the documentation is skimpy and desultory, and the musical aspects are completely boring.
There was something a little charming about it, perhaps because of its offbeat nature but also perhaps because my expectations were really low to begin with. But overall, it just didn't achieve any interesting effects, politically or cinematically. Considering the incredible access to the elites they somehow managed to get, the high quality production values, and Lapham's involvement, it is surprising more couldn't have been made of this project. I think it was a problem of being "too clever by half", and had the idea men behind this gotten out of the way of the issues, it could have been more successful.
