Better Australian Movies:

There should be lots of them,
I can think of one right off of the top:
"the man from snowy river".

reply

I can think of a few.

Romper Stomper
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Gallipoli
The Dish
The Castle
Wake In Fright
Spotswood
Strictly Ballroom

These are off the top of my head and in no particular order. There are plenty more.

There are a lot of turkeys as well.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

Breaker Morant - also starring Jack Thompson and Bryan Brown...but, of course, they were in almost ALL Australian movies..

reply

Omg, strictly ballroom = LOVE

reply

They might not be better than "Australia" but i liked them better.

-Malcolm (was good but weird.)
-Mad Max 1 and 2
-Two Hands
-Wolf Creek

reply

I'd agree with many of the above (although "Kiss or Kill" and "Two Hands" in particular seemed pretty limp to me, but to each one's own).

A few more:

Sunday Too Far Away
Don's Party
The Devil's Playground
Newsfront
Backroads
Road Games
Long Weekend
The Year My Voice Broke
Flirting
Sweetie
The Boys
Love Serenade
Holy Smoke
Radiance
Chopper
The Proposition
The Tracker
Kenny
Ten Canoes
Mary and Max
Samson and Delilah
_____
I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.

They may have been better, but how many of them made $211,342,221 world wide? Even if it cost the "estimated" $130,000,000 to make, that is a major financial success.

You have to make money where you can. Most "quality" films lose money.

A 'major' financial success is not less than a 200% ratio on revenue vs cost. Most movies only report production budgets, so you need assume that the actual total budget including marketing and everything was closer to $250 - 300K. Australia certainly was not a success.

The common 'breakeven' is about 2.5 - 3 times production cost, particular on a production of this size.

The Rage in Placid Lake

"I am Jack's cold sweat."

reply

I don't believe you. Most films make a loss.

reply

Rubbish! You made this story up to make yourself look important.

You just responded AGAIN 34 months later.

Do you think he will answer this time?

and I just realized you answered him 3 years after his 2010 post.

Please post here again in 2019. I will mark it on my calendar to come back and check.

You either really needed to stress having the last word or are drunk.

Or I'm drunk.

Funny stuff!

Thanks for making me smile.

Have a good day!

reply

Codswallop! You are not what you claim to be and you made all that up. Most films make a loss.

Glad someone remembered The Year My Voice Broke and Flirting. Great movies! So was Picnic at Hanging Rock - maybe one of the best. Walkabout is one of my top ten all time favorites, although a British film, set in Australia. I thought Australia was great, by the way. To each his or her own.

reply

Has anyone mentioned 'Oyster Farmer'? You get to see Alex O'Laughlin's bare butt... reason enough. Oh, and it's quite a good movie, too.

reply

I love Snowy River!!!!

reply

I can't believe no one said "Quigley Down Under"!! lol

reply

Agreed. That's one of my favorite westerns! "I never said I didn't know how to use it." Hahaha!

reply

Are there any movies that show how Australia was settled? That's what I thought this was going to be about. I guess I should've read the plot outline before renting.

Go s!

reply

Try Mary Bryant.

There's a mini series with Colin Friels (Judy Davis from 'My Brilliant Career' is his wife). He starred in a movie called 'Malcolm' that was a huge comedy success in Australia at the time. The mini series made only for TV was called 'For the Term of His Natural Life', a well known classic. You should be able to get hold of the book. It's the story of a convict being transported to Australia.

Most of the really good quality stuff here in Australia isn't in film. It's in mini series. For instance, the best work I have ever seen of Nicole Kidman was her early mini series work ('Vietnam' and 'Bangkok Hilton'). We have some great TV mini series projects going on at the moment too about criminal family gangs.
