I really liked this, but bothered by Plot Holes-SPOILERS

I really really liked the screenplay. I found it very compelling and realistic. Particularly her scenes w/ Firth. BUT the ending was poorly communicated/assumed too much on part of audience. AND, if she really loved him, why wouldn't she go back to him after a week or so instead of when she finally did? Wouldn't she want to try to get pregnant with firth?

If I understood it correctly, her body rejected the second implant attempt, convincing her that she could not bear a child, so she adopted a Chinese girl and made a life w/ Firth(not necessarily in that order.) But I think the one major fault of the film was at the very end; that story I just described was not at all well communicated.

But I still thought it was a successful and interesting work. Bette Midler and Firth were stellar, I thought.

I don't think it's a plot hole. I think it's assuming the audience is smart enough to understand what you wrote, that the IVF didn't work, both are living together and they adopted a Chinese girl. You understood =) I don't think it needs more explanations.

Very much agree! Plot holes these days frequently seem to be directly proportional to the amount of personal thought demanded of the viewer.

There is ambiguity in that she may have used a sperm donor, or the child may not be hers (possibly a friend's etc). It made me stop and think for a few milliseconds, and then I linked it up with her adoptive mother's nagging about adopting a Chinese baby. Then it was a wry smile moment, as her past linked with her present and the gap in plot between the points in the story came together. I liked that she went with her adoptive mother's advice, repeating that aspect of her family history while her new family began to coalesce. Intelligent writing, in my book.

She felt she did not have time to wait. Things with Firth were OVER as far as things stood, and besides even if they reconciled, it was a very new relationship -- not the time to try to have a baby together. She was running out of time to have a baby biologically so she went ahead and pursued IVF.
