Incesteous overtones?

Wasn't the young girl that the old men duped into bending over so they could admire her behind, a relative of theirs and someone that they knew since she was a baby? This was not a funny scene.

reply

Ya know, I was thinking that too...I'm glad someone else caught that. Thanks.

What most people forget is that, while this movie has funny parts, it is not intended to be a comedy(We're actually watching this film in my sociology class).

I think that the scene was important because it shows an example of how people's behavior gets "laughed off" or ignored. Everyone has a relative that displays inappropriate comments/actions(some much worse than that-not that this character's behavior is excusable). We're quick to critique the movie but how many of us have called out a relative when they have acted inappropriately? Example: How many of you are against racism wholeheartedly, yet excuse the racist comments of an elder relative, because "they can't help it, they were just raised that way"?

Just my $0.02.

I can relate to what you are saying.

Unfortunately for generations, this happens very frequently in families. For some reason they think it is innocent and okay. Go figure.

I found the scene disturbing and frustrating yet nonetheless reality which is why I try to keep my children close at hand be it at a family reunion or otherwise.

reply

What you said is so true. I learned that many kids were molested by a relative or close friend that the family trusted.

A former acquaintance once told me when he was fifteen he sexually experimented on his then nine year old cousin in the basement while their parents were upstairs playing cards. This happened on three occassions. When I called him on it, he still does not think he did anything wrong because the girl did not protest.

It was really disturbing to learn that this molestation happen practically under the parent's noses. People tend to think that you don't have to watch children around relatives or family events.

But this scene in the movie colored these men as extremely low characters, including the one played by Tyler Perry. at first I saw him as a funny cantankerous old man. buy now I see him differently.

I agree with loriloo2000

And that this movie shows how dirty and heartless men can truly be.Like Carlos and Lisa's dad,and the fact that they had woman wrapped around their finger like Victoria and Victoria's mother. And how woman can stand up for themselves and fight.

reply

Aww, look at the little misandrist. How about you stop generalising, dumbass.

reply

good point -- the reality of what has happened and goes on in many families but gets hushed up or ignored

I know it's quite late, but the only time a Tyler Perry film should be played in a learning environment is to show how not to make a movie

reply

Yeah, and the same when Joe tells Victoria "Turn around so that I can see you walk away" Yuck, that's his niece! :P

reply

I guess you misunderstood that one. He said it to get rid of her, not to watch her booty. She wasn't welcomed in the house!

reply

You think?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Don't you see Rosie? You are the pig of my dreams, I don't need anything else"

reply

No, she didn't misunderstand. When Joe said "Turn around so I can watch you walk out of the room" he was quite clearly referring to watching her behind as she walked out. Although neither Madea nor Joe seem overly warm to her, there is no indication that she cannot come to the house.

reply

Funny because my sister and I was watching this and I said the same exact thing, and in't she like a minor? I love Tyler Perry but I think that was uncalled for...It's a Family Reunion. P.s. Joe does the same thing in "Tyler Perry's: Diary of a Mad Black Woman" when I believe Helen(elise) comes to stay with Madea.

reply

I'm probably going to get hell for this, but I don't care. Remember they are in the south...now BEFORE y'all start accusing me of being stereotypical...anybody here who has read the Madea book Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings...she talks about she dated a boy once then found out he was her brother, but they told her since they were in the south, it was acceptable. But she said she didn't want to raise her nephew as her son, so she wasn't with that, but other parts of the family are.

reply

I also thought it was incestuous. The girl was a relative. But they were dirty old men wishing they could take viagra!

reply

Novastar...

Isn't that book fiction?
But, since they said it in a book, it MUST be the truth, right? How is it not stereotypical to take something from a fiction story and use it as justification in your post?

Plus... I don't care what the book said, it's NOT acceptable in the south. Sorry to burst your bubble.

"Will, I told you...If you live with a hetero long enough...You're going to catch it."

reply

I agree with you. I've heard family members justify it if it's beyond a 1st or 2nd cousin. I'm from the south and on my cousin's side of the family there is someone with a couple of kids by family member. It's an inside secret.

reply

Yes, I was disturbed by this scene yet at the same time it didn't surprise me because it's so true to life. I don't understand what make men think that they can attend a family reunion and gawk at the young girls, uh hello pervert!!....that's your little cousin or niece! I don't understand why they just don't give a $hit.

reply

I don't know bout you ,but I had to verbally threaten an elder gentelman with an ass whuppin related to me for making such a comment. I'm sorry older or not you talk like that about a minor around me you will be dealt with harshly and I'm no woman I'm pretty big dude !

reply

Good! Probably would've done him some good to actually get popped in the mouth.

reply

Doesn't just happen with men. I've had female relatives when I was younger, seemingly like they were checking me out. One telling me how "cute" my eyes were and how sexy I would be one day and all of that.

I think that's just the old school generation's way of say "appreciating" things I suppose. Don't make it right though I know that.

Am I Insane? YES!!

reply

Yes, old men should NOT be looking at young women like that and stupid for her to be wearing those clothes, however, that's not my idea.
My idea is that those men weren't REALLY related to her. She is probably just a child of a friend of the family. That's my thinking. But in that way it's probably just the same because you think of that person as part of the family. So, yeah, that's the first thing that came to my mind.

Big news flash: Incest is not accepted in the south any more than it is anywhere else. I have lived in the south all my life, and can safely say that I do not know anyone who has married or dated a member of their own family.

reply

Most people are molested or raped by someone they know and trust. Usually it's by a family member.

Let's not forget the part at the reunion near the end where all the young family members are dancing in the yard grinding and gyrating all over each other. That part always creeps me out because I can't help but think "They're all related! Why are they doing sexual dances with each other?!"

------------
Hey Jin! You better not be cheating on me!!

reply

I'm pretty sure they weren't all meant to be related. People bring "dates" and friends to family reunions too. Actually I don't remember, I'll have to watch, but no way young relatives would knowingly dance together like that.

reply

i agree with you. I've never heard any one here in the South that agrees with incest at all. We are in the South, not another country! We have laws against it just like all the other states. I don't know where that fool got their info that incest is OK in the South.

reply

"Overtones"? The movie was about incest and spousal abuse, didn't you notice?
.

reply

Yes !

Wasn't Tyler Perry the victim of child abuse ?

I think this is an issue he feels the need to focus on ?

Plus, as "ladybo454" said, " Most people are molested or raped by someone they know and trust. Usually it's by a family member. "

People fear abuse from a stranger but it is more likely a "trusted" relative or acquaintance who will be able to get into position to attack you.

And, a lot of people mess up with their kids by trusting them with some guy/gal because they feel he is kin (or close) while he doesn't feel that way.

For a lot of people -- and certainly a lot of black people, strong loyalties don't go much beyond the immediate family and a cousin is just another stranger.

reply

crackers like you and i prolly don't know much about black family reunions. my memory of family reunions are long picnics with a few dozen people at the most, but that's not what this was.

when i lived in the south over a decade ago, i had black friends/acquaintances/co-workers/neighbors/enemies (we had those in the south, unlike the land of apartheid where i now live.) they used to wear family reunion t-shirts, and they told me what they were like: a black family reunion can take many days and include hundreds of people, and the attendees aren't necessarily closely related or even blood relatives at all.

in fact, vanessa's boyfriend wasn't a blood relative, and little nikki wasn't related, and carlos wasn't even welcome, so we don't really know who was family and who was not; however, that dirty-old-man scene was as significant as the gambling and the nasty dancing because little old ruby had to witness evil for her to set them straight.

context, baby, context. c'mon now, people.

reply

Just have to throw my 2 cents in. This scene kind of creeped me out too, but it probably does happen. Anybody remember Poetic Justice when they crash a family reunion? "Cousin P" sees a group of women standing together and he starts checkin them out and asks if they are related to him. They say I hope so, as in, "so quit looking at me." He answers "Well you know twice removed don't count." So I think there is sometimes some joking about how attractive a family member is. I'm not saying it is right! I would be grossed out if any of my male relatives ever looked at me that way but you know what I'm saying.

reply

That scene wasn't remotely funny. I have to admitt she did have a nice booty. She was stupid though to actually think those old men wasn't trying to look at her.

Aside from that, it wasn't very funny, and that does happen in real life. I seen something similar in my family once. GROSS! Lucky I don't see them folks.

reply

I didn't think that was a good scene in the movie. I mean, sure we can appreciate how a relative might look, but they seemed like... they were actually 'wanting' her. That was just gross, to me.
