Forrest was good, but DiCaprio was better

DiCaprio's performances in Blood Diamond and The Departed were on a different level, he should've won for either of those ahead of Whittaker

McAvoy was good as well, and should've been nominated for best actor as he was in more scenes than Forrest, but still nowhere near as good as Leo

reply

You know what, I only watched this movie to see who beat out Leo because I thought he deserved it for either of the two movies you mentioned BUT I was blown away by both Forrest and McAvoy. Honestly, I didn't think he had it in him but he totally deserved that Oscar. Plus, McAvoy's performance was just as good and should have at least got him a nomination.

reply

You are so right! I'm baffled McAvoy hasn't been nominated for an Oscar. He was amazing in Atonement and even better in The Last King Of Scotland.

reply

Don't even get me started on the 'Atonement' snub. How Saoirse Ronan got nominated and James didn't *beep* blows my mind.

reply

The Academy Awards are a joke. They just snub people for others who were snubbed years earlier. Art Carney winning Best Actor for Harry and Tonto over Al Pacino for The Godfather, Part II was the best example. http://www.cracked.com/article_18460_5-reasons-oscars-matter-even-less-than-you-thought.html

Haven't seen Blood Diamod but your having a laugh if you think Decaprio was better in The Departed. No chance. It wasn't even close. Whittaker was fantastic in this film, Di caprio played an irish guy with a boston accent okay

reply

Erm thats the point, its the Irish Mafia, most of Boston is irish

Actually he played a neurotic, paranoid, angey and vulnerable man, and he did it brilliantly. You can see his fear everytime he is on screen. It was perfect. These are his best scenes

I saw your videos. I did like dicaprio in this film and thought he was the best actor.
I think whitaker role was more difficult and he was great, so was mcavoy. He deserved his oscar and dicaprio will get plenty more opportunities

Than Whittaker's? No. I saw both Blood Diamond and the Departed, and he was great in both (I prefer his performance in Blood Diamond, but they were both excellent); however, I saw DiCaprio giving a good performance. In the Last King of Scotland, I saw Idi Amin. There were times when I forgot it was Whittaker and was so into his role that I simply thought I was watching Idi Amin. I think it was a well deserved award amidst some great competition.

reply

DiCaprio was excellent in The Blood Diamond, and was also playing a role based on a real person. I can't say that he was better than Forrest Whittaker or James MacAvoy, but I think if The Blood Diamond had been released in a different year, DiCaprio would have won.

For what it's worth, the Academy has a long history of slighting some brilliant actors and directors.

IMO 2006 was a great year for actors, and all male actors deserved their nominations, and were equally great. They were all deserving winners, since they had amazing performances.

But Forest had the edge, since it was his year. He won almost everything else,so a Oscar was expected.
But it was well-deserved.

reply

Back when DiCaprio was making films like The Basketball Diaries, I would have agreed. But now? He hasn't lived up to his potential, and is a good actor - not a great one.

I haven't seen anything in recent years that is Oscar worthy from Dicaprio. Whittaker fully deserved the best actor award.

McAvoy is becoming a disappointment too. He goes from this to bleeding X-Men.

reply

Whittaker and McAvoy were both better than di Caprio and Whittaker was outstanding in portraying the complexities of Amin's character.

reply

Nah, Leo botched the accent in Blood Diamond big time. I think Forest was still better than Leo in The Departed

reply

He totally deserved the oscar nod! over di caprio
