Loving the film until... SPOILER

So hey you're a doctor. You are *beep* someone's wife. This someone happens to be a general, so you know he has been *beep* around. God knows what diseases the general has given his wife whom you're *beep* And you know how prevalent HIV is in Uganda.

Despite the stds and HIV you've studied in your medical books, you still choose to sleep with the girl without a condom. You can at least give her a morning after pill right? No? OK.

But you know the general is psycho and you've seen him kill people. Still no condoms and pills?

Yup. My suspension for disbelief died at the moment the girl says she's pregnant.

reply

You know this film took place in the early 1970's, right? HIV wasn't even given a name until the early 1980's.

reply

He was blind drunk, so all of logic went out the window.

Also, this took place in the mid-70s. No "morning after pill" then.

Yeah, they're dead, they're...all messed up!

reply

He was drunk and depressed, so his judgement was poor.
HIV wasn't known at that time, although other STDs were.

Sleeping with a wife of a brutal, homicidal dictator is probably about the dumbest thing he could have done, true.

Agreed, although the film does present a fairly realistic scenario as to how this came about. Still and all not using a condom was just crazy. Interesting that the film doesn't really touch on the frequently bandied suggestion that Amin may have been affected by long-term syphilis of the brain.

HIV was known before as GRID (Gay-Related Immune Disease, or something). Not entirely unknown, but not entirely well-known either.

reply

"GRID" was an acronym used briefly in the USA in the early 1980s before the term HIV/AIDS was settled on. It certainly wouldn't have been known or used in Africa (or elsewhere) in the 1970s. http://tinyurl.com/k6tk93n

Yep, especially after only just finding out about this. Maybe earlier when he was buddies with him and trusted him but of all the gorgoues African ladies there, he chose her. What a fool.

reply

Whoa. It's movie about a country where hundreds of thousands of people were turtured and murdered. And you are worried about this woman and condoms.

Well, they didn't know about HIV then. And she chose to have sex with him. And finally, it certainly is not the worst thing that happened there.

reply

It takes place in the 70s, get it? HIV? Good lord, learn something, will you please?

Time wounds all heels.

reply

Why the hell would you have unprotected sex with a woman from a third world country in the first place? Disgusting.

Wendy? Darling? Light, of my life!
