Shooting the Sound System

What David Norton was thinking when he shot the sound system in the cave: Oh look, a machine that plays music! I don't know how to switch this thing off! Too many buttons! I have a gun, so I must use my gun! Never mind that I might need all the bullets on the way out. Never mind that a bullet might ricochet and hit me. If I'm holding a gun, I must use it! There, I've shot it to hell! Sure, it could've been turned off with the push of a button, but I'm too stupid to do that, and besides, shooting it is so much cooler!

A sound system like the one in the film would have a remote control.

Which means, if David turned the radio off and/or muted the sound, Kovak or one of his "assistants" would have used the remote to turn the radio back on and/or raise the volume.

I don't know how you saw the sound system and "knew" it was controlled by remote (it looked like a '70s amplifier and such), but even if you were correct (which you weren't - did you see all the KNOBS and stuff? Do you see those on your plasma screen remote control television?), but let's say you WERE, the OP was right - the gun and it's bullets could have been needed for a much more, uh, "gun = best tool for the job" situation. He could have unplugged the sound system, picked up the amp and smashed it, probably many more things.

In fact, as far as I'm concerned, if Kovak was watching David the whole time, he probably would have been writing notes for the "new novel". Something along the lines of, "Don't have the hero 'shoot open the locked gate' - that simply doesn't work! And don't have the hero shoot the sound system - what a waste of bullets. In fact, I'm hoping by the time you find this note you'll have realized there was only one reason I gave you the gun at all - to shoot me!!"

And it pretty much guarantees the bullets aren't going to be needed for a 'thrilling conclusion.' And who was the gun-toting enabler at the end? (who shot the cop)

There is a goof in that scene the display of the cd player shatters but next appears unscathed
