Back on the plane (Spoiler)

I'm tempted to think that he was imagining the whole thing for his next book seeing that it began and ended on a plane. Although that would be a silly ending I suppose, so I doubt it. But we know he has a runaway imagination, as in his lecture he says he picks up small cues from observations and through a process of mnemonics his mind goes into overdrive creating connections and ultimately a story. On the plane at the beginning he was getting cues.
Maybe this kind of speculation was intended by the director.

Interesting theory, but I can't remember who was he with on the plane in that final scene?
Is he on his own or next to his wife?

reply

I don't think we see who he is with as it is shot fairly close up. I think it is a little teaser done on purpose.

I just finished watching the movie and the last two scenes - Silvia in the taxi and David starting to write - seem to convey the message that David might have been imagining the whole thing.

I think you raise a valid issue that it was all his imagination, and the final sequence does suggest that. It doesn't appear he's sitting next to his girlfriend, but then again, maybe she was part of his imagination as well.

I thought that was just to show that Kovak was right. David was on his way back to the US, and he had to raise the alarm to what Kovak had done and that, like he said, the government would find the chips and use the technology. David had a conscience and couldn't stand by and watch that happen. Even though he initially refused to write Kovak's story, he couldn't get the thoughts of what has happened out of his head and he had to write them down, doing exactly what Kovak wanted.

reply

No, it wasn't in his mind. The compelling reason for David to write the book that Kovak wanted was so that other government entities would NOT be able to use the mind control technique that Kovak pioneered. Also David was sitting next to the window in a different seat than the first plane ride. Jane was in the window seat before. She was nowhere to be seen in the last plane ride for the obvious reasons.

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

I think all the events in Mallorca were in his mind. He shakes his head slightly before beginning to write - as if he was dozing. It reminded me of the scene on the plane ride to Mallorca. He sees flashing lights from a seat in front, goes up and sees a man with closed eyes that are moving wildly under this eyelids. Then he's back in his seat. Wakes up and the lights are gone. It illustrates how his imagination works. He later explains in the lecture how he comes up with ideas for his books.
