Turned off by the coke

I'm a big fan of Simon Pegg and of Kirsten Dunst.
But this film was quite a letdown from Pegg's previous movies. Not as funny by half.

On of a number of reasons I was disappointed by How to Lose Friends was that I was unhappy to see Sidney so readily leap at the opportunity to use and share cocaine. I don't think those scenes added much to the humor, but they certainly detracted from the movie, at least for me.

Meh, why wouldn't she? Have you ever tried coke? It's a blast

Well, chump, the coke was certainly added for comedic purposes but it's also plain that this allowed him to meet Kirsten Dunst on the way back to the pool and drive her home, etc... Ease up man. I take it the many curses throughout the movie didn't ruffle your feathers too much but implied drug use did? On second thought you're right, that's just crossing the line.

reply

I agree with the OP here, they could have easily used "a beer" instead of coke if it was simply for the plot device of him meeting Kirsten on his way back to the pool. It just seemed so out of place, almost like they wanted to inject an element of contrived controversy in a quite simple and tame but lame movie.

"It's because of movies like this that illegal downloading exists and you can be bored for free..."

reply

You people need to relax. Drugs exist, pretending they don't won't make them go away. I don't use myself, but pretty much everyone else I know dabbles. As long as you don't let it control you, I don't see the problem.

reply

Conttroversy? It's a film about the star system, coke is a very realistic element. Besides, Sophie is the stereotypical starlet...

But I have love in my heart - Yes, as a thief has riches, a usurer money

reply

... could have easily used "a beer" instead of coke ...
LOL seriously?!? ya sure - in sophie maes' drunken state her line should have instead been "A BEER makes me really horny..."!

you obviously didnt pay attention. he didnt use it. he turned it down, then went back to get it because megan fox wanted some. but seeing as this is based on a true story, get over it!

If you had experienced anything besides your church group, you wouldn't say that. You'd actually put in an open viewed discussional piece. Oh, how closed minded the religious are. I was raised baptist, and decided to study methodist, buddism, toaism, and a bit of muslim but I've realised that the vast majority of religious groups are never open minded to experience that fresh new feeling they got the first time they opened their minds to a different view. As a child god is magical, yet as an adult, those who were raised in that fashion seem to be quick to judge based on their sole belief system. Its time to grow up. War started on that mindset. The crusades? Ever heard of them? Muslim wars?
One day our churches will be supported by commercialist advertisement aimed at underage sex and alcoholism. Starting with catholics.

That was sarcasm... If you weren't all coked out you wouldn't have auto-flamed. Calm down before you set the house of fire, Chief.

P.S. It's also a reference to pop culture South Park in support of Idiocracy in America, including you. If you look closely I did that too. :D

Rawk Star lines for every1!

vipin-ahlawat, what you're doing is indicative of VERY narrow-minded thinking. You're taking some random example and extrapolating it to a generality about a people. U.S. is huge, full of many varying group of people. Much more so than U.K. or wherever you're from.

Also, the last I checked, we're still the world's biggest consumer of illegal drugs, mkay?

Anyway, I do wonder if this movie's worth seeing.

reply

There's WAY more drug use in the book.

When did cocaine become such a perverse thing in our society...I would never advocate the use of the drug because it can destroy lives with addiction but in the 80s and early 90s the drug was "acceptable" in many levels of society. When did the transition from tolerable to horrendous happen?

reply

If you had ever dated someone or were married to someone with an occasional coke
habit, you wouldn't make that comment. My experience is that it turns people into
self-serving liars. Never mind the positives. The negatives outweigh them.

Coke is fun. At least it wasn't meth or pcp. Those are dangerous. Coke is harmless when you do it occasionally.

reply

Coke was appropriate/perfect for the story because Hollywood is full of cokeheads. Sorry, but it's true. It was one of the most believable parts of the movie!

Besides, of all the things to be turned off by in this movie, it's the cocaine?! Really?!
