its not that hard to kill a dog

the movie was enjoyable but rediculous. are you kidding me? If that'd happened to me i'd be killing dogs left and right. And you know you would too...

reply

the kid could have just took them out one by one with the arrows from the roof.
easy

reply

and where did they put the baseball bat after they used it on one of the dogs ?! why not keep it close ?! it did its job when the Hill Harper character used it ...

stupid actions, but still enjoying enough movie :)

Very doubtfully for one even if he popped some off with arrows he only had so many arrows. They talked about it being a pack of at least 28 ,dogs who had been genetically engineered and trained to fight and kill. They had also gone wild as well. The odds for anyone I am afraid would not be good unless someone had an automatic weapon. Dogs can defiantly do damage if they want to and when they are in a pack they all work together. That scene near the end if this was real life those two would have been dead and eaten.

I thought he could tie a line to the arrow like when he shot it at the garage, and then just start shooting the dogs with the arrow from the roof and then use the line to pull the arrow back and re-use it? It would be worth a try anyway. Or after they boarded up the house, allow one entrance with a small opening and as the dogs try to enter, use the baseball bat or fireplace poker and try to beat the dogs to death one by one. Or if they brought the weapons with them into the attic they could have kept the attic door open and beat them to death from above as they tried to attack them. That cabin was well stocked with stuff, I'm sure they had other items which could make good weapons. Maybe they could have used some poison on some meat to use as bait and that could have killed them.

reply

Oh! And so that that mean you would be doing that for real?! Huh?!

A ridiculous point, though I'll assume you're joking. If not, however:

1) The Canine Family is one of the more perfect in the world's food-chain. Pack hunters, strong, fast, intelligent and have been known to solve some quite complex visual and auditorial puzzles, they are not a family I'd like to be on the receiving end of.
2) Canaris Familiaris (the domestic dog) has only been domesticated since Humans first fed them scraps by their fires before the Ice Age around 10,000 years ago. Primal instinct dictates that a dog, if threatened, still takes a stand. 10,000 years hasn't bred this out of them, yet.
3) The breeds of Canine shown in the film are more often associated with the "tougher" breeds. Alsatian, Rottwiellers, Giant Snauzher etc, are often tagged as bad dogs. This isn't necessarily always the case, but quite often it is.
4) You have the second most efficient pack predator on land, you take the most dangerous, naturally aggressive, loyal, defensive and vicious breeds amongst them, pump them full of chemicals to spark more anger-opted temprements, starve them and then put them up against teenagers with no firearms, no protection and no way of controlling them? Yeah, I'd enjoy watching you in said position as well.

Lets just be glad it isn't real. I could give you more examples if you fail to see...

That's a lot of serious for such an unserious topic. All dogs are classified as the same species of wolf, and these were the strongest of them.

But I hope when you called them the second most efficient pack predator, you meant humans were #1, because we are. Humans always win against nature because of our intelligence. You are proposing a lopsided confrontation where the strength of the animals matter. That's not how humans have ever operated. We are not built for brute strength. Our hands are weak, our nails would rip off our fingers if used as claws. But our hands make tools. If they had pooled their resources they could have dominated their territory and then made it out ok.

I'm not saying that's what the film should have done, because it's just a fun movie about scary dogs. But if you want to go serious and realistic, a few well placed fires, some extra clothing, knives bats, arrows, height advantage, climbing advantage, digging advantage, they could have sat up on their roof and slaughtered the dogs for a couple days until the dogs respected their territory. Maybe not kill them all, but enough to show dominance.

I am a human being. No pack of dogs will ever outwit me. Genetically modified or not, within 6 hours of dawn after the first attack every dog on that island would be either dead or terrified of me. I am the John Rambo of dog island.

Even if you could kill them all Mr Macho Man, a couple of bites could lead to serious infections and weaken or kill you. These were not just ordinary dogs. Otherwise I'd try to pet them and say "Here boy...come on by"

A grown man can easily defeat a large breed dog one on one, but clearly these dogs didn't attack one at a time.

I am so smart, the only thing I can't comprehend is how stupid everyone else is

reply

A grown man MIGHT be able to fight off a dog that size, but it would be far from easy and they wouldn't come out of it without serious injury. Dogs are very strong and very efficient in a fight; they go for the weakest parts of the body to inflict maximum injury with minimal effort. Most trained attack dogs have been taught to go for non-lethal body parts like the arms and not use enough force to cause serious injury. A wild dog is going for the throat or gut. As far as easy for a grown man to fight off, that stops when a dog is about 35-40 pounds depending on breed and situation.

This is a daft statement, a tibetan mastiff coming at you full speed weighing up to 72kg which most males untrained in a gym would struggle to lift, never mind thrashing and attacking! Jaw strength to snap bone, maybe with a knife you'd stand a chance but one on one, your going to be chowder!

reply

That is not true, it is all psychological. You think the dog is more powerful than you, but it really isn't. A man of equal size and weight has a huge advantage over a dog. All you have to do is avoid the initial lunge then use all your force to strike the top of its head using your elbow. The only dangerous part of the dog is its mouth, a dog cannot use its claws like a cat can.
