Went to a screening and.

It's GREAT.
Robert DeNiro - amazing
Paul Dano - amazing
Julianne Moore - great

I just came back from a screening in NJ, filled our surveys, etc.

questions?

I've Made a Huge Mistake

reply

I was there as well. I didn't like it as much as the prior poster.

Others on the board were questioning the use of profanity in the title.

"Welcome to Suck City" is the current title.

I saw a screening too and I really loved it. Highly recommend. Engrossing story, extremely well-acted. All were amazing!

The son redeems the father. The son became the parent of the father. I have to say, also, that Paul Dano is always likable, in every movie.

I was also at said screening. It could use some trimming in the editing and pacing, but overall it was a pretty good movie. I'm glad to see DeNiro in a good role again, he has been relegated to fodder for the past decade. I'm happy he is back to his original form here.

reply

anyone feel that the ending was unexpected?
I was sure it was going to the opposite of what it came out to be.
and no I didn't read the memoir

So what do you think, has good ol Bob another shot at the oscars?
And how is the film compared to "Everybody's Fine"?
Because before this movie started there was so much talk that De Niro will get another nod and that the movie is really good. Then it turnes out to be very mediocre and he never had a real shot on a nomination. I have the bad feeling that it will be the same with this movie.

reply

I thought Everybody's Fine was a fantastic film. Just not the kind that panders to the attention-deficit of audiences today. But it had a loving cadence, many understated (or even unstated) moments, and a fantastic performance from almost everyone including the kid.

*SPOILER WARNING*

Re: "watisgooddar"--yeah, the ending seemed to come out of left field. They skipped a few years and next thing you know Flynn Sr. has qualified for an apartment and Flynn Jr. has published a book of poetry, gotten married, and had a child. Then Flynn Sr. comes to hear his son read at a book launch and meets his wife and daughter.

It was a positive ending but didn't really seem to tie into what came before. I guess they were going for the redemptive kind of ending. I don't really know if all this happened in reality.

"Relegated to fodder for the past decade" makes it sound like he had no choice.

i was at the screening also. i was the obnoxious guy at the bottom of by the exit, does anyone remember me? i was chatting up the two old ladies sitting next to me and one of the workers.

reply

I was there too last night. I enjoyed the movie a lot. It's nice to see Robert De Niro getting a good role again for a change. I thought that Julianned Moore and Paul Dano also were terrific. The only change I think that should be made is the title which is currently set to Welcome To Suck City which was what was credited when I watched the screening last night in Paramus, NJ. How many other people were there at the AMC theater last night???

Was Robert DeNiro Award-worthy or just better than his auto-pilot mode?

I've been waiting, like so many other DeNiro fans, for another great performance from him for such a long time. Stone and Everybody's Fine were good, but not exactly vintage DeNiro.

reply

IMO, better than his recent ho-hum work of the past 10 yrs -- but not a renaissance by any means.

It's Dano's film -- but he has only slightly more screen time than De Niro.

reply

You guys crack me up!!! All these expectations on De Niro. I just don't get it. I know I have to be talking to some pretty intelligent people here. GEE......

The man is a LEGEND! Probably the greatest screen actor of all time!(that was not just said for a debate, please.) He has nothing, nothing left to prove, end of story.

I am sure you know he is, or nearly is 70 years old!?? Just chill already, quit expecting him to do what he did in his 30's, 40's, and 50's.
No disrespect intended, really.

reply

@Jeannie

This argument makes no sense! You dont know why people have high expectations of a legendary actor? Erm maybe because he was/is a legendary actor!

Does his age really matter?(see Christopher Plummer and many others). If people feel he is coasting through his roles and has lost hunger for acting then they can hold and voice that opinion. You seem to feel this is ok and he should be let off because of his (agreed) amazing body of work from the 70's 80's & 90's but i feel that each film and performance stands on its own merits and while i have huge respect for a huge number of De Niro performances i dont believe this entitles him to do whatever he wants without critism from fans and critics now

I'm reading the memoir now because I heard that Julianne Moore is in this movie, and I'm a really big fan. How much screen time does she actually get? Is she involved with any of the flashbacks (showing her when Nick as smaller?... any of those scenes that are in the book?) Does it show her suicide and/or dead body?

I'm really excited for DeNiro and Dano... the book just keeps getting more and more compelling!!

reply

Thanks for the Julianne Moore spoiler! I hate to be surprised at the movies or when reading a book. I like to see everything predictably rolling out before me. Why should life be exciting?!

reply

Ha.

Then why are you reading a thread where the original poster has already seen the movie AND asked for any questions about it?

Plus, WHY have you not read the book? (I thought I was late to the game.) Or conducted even a preliminary Google search over Nick Flynn? It's a great story. You should get up on it before everyone starts "spoiling" it for you.

reply

you should of warned people about the spoiler thats why its there
