From a shallow SOB....

So, I guess I'm a shallow SOB, but I just don't get it.
To me, it's like various types of abstract art (it's in the eye of the beholder).

My basic reaction... "What's the point?"

Don't get me wrong, the acting was great; Robert DeNiro was marvelous (as usual), as well as, Paul Dano.

But the storyline...
I just don't get these films that start and end in the middle of a story.
To me, it has no sustenance, no foundation.

Here's my point...
If a friend tells you something that happened to them (no matter how intriguing), yet doesn't offer some type of ending, you might ask, "and...?"

Without closure, it doesn't seem to be a story.

I'm not trolling here.
I'm looking for insight into movies without definitive endings and looking to discuss, not argue. :)

I think the ending was him sobering up, getting his life together, and doing something about his father. I see a closure in this film.

Yes, but my problem was, we really didn't see why or how that happened...it was just a quick narration and a couple of scenes at the end. We go from an aimless kid dabbling in drugs with a minimum wage job and a problematic father to a quick narration if "then I went back to school now I'm teaching" then a scene to Gus father meeting his wife and kid.

I also really didn't "get" how his father damaged him so much. I think having a suicidal mother probably had more to do with any problems he had getting his life together.
