'Only three great American writers...'


I honestly can't tell - is this line supposed to be a joke (on the character saying it), or is this an acceptable diagnosis of American literature? I think the rest of the movie looks good, but that quote irks me every time this trailer pops up in the theater.

Just curious how you guys think that bit's supposed to be read (heard). OT, Paul Dano looks awesome in his role here.

A joke. Or mentioning yourself among your favorite writers. Hawthorne and Conrad popped into my head as he said it. And Melville as I write.

If you mean Joseph Conrad, he's not an American writer.

Yes, I forgot. Polish and wound up in England. He was a favorite of one of my HS English teachers so I sort of conflated it. It's actually been many years since I read 'Lord Jim'. And of course 'Heart of Darkness' was made into an American film, APOCALYPSE NOW .

How about William Faulkner or Thomas Wolfe? Faulkner actually wrote for Hollywood.

Interesting statement nevertheless.

Twain is usually credited with writing the great American novel "Huckleberry Finn". After that picking the second great American writer is up for discussion. I vote for Faulkner many would say Melville, Hawthorne, Salinger etc...
