Part One

Didn't reach any great heights for me.

Couldn't help but feel 'who cares?' at the end of it.

You really are a bit sad & desperate, aren't you billsbunnie? Just an observation, not a criticism, as I too am an RR fan, but hardly in your epic league!! I agree with previous post that `The Silence' was a bit ho-hum (now that we've seen both episodes) In fact, the only good thing about it was RR, who was his usual accomplished self. He was in almost all the scenes, and carried the whole thing off single-handedly with his usual aplomb and magnificence. The script was tedious in my opinion, but RR was very pretty..............

Always happy to oblige, billsbunnie.
Ahhh, to be young and in love...............(sigh)

And back to `The Silence'............. To me the whole thing looked like an attempt to do something arty and deep, and it didn't quite come off, although it could have, because with RR in the lead role, how could it have gone wrong?????? Personally, I reckon they should have dumped the script, given the director another gig, and followed RR around with a camera while he just acted like himself.
Prior to it being shown on local free-to-air TV it was given a real build-up, which just added to the disappointment of it not being quite what it could have been.
And yes, I agree that (the character) Richard's under-reaction to discovering that May was his mother was a bit weird, although Richard was meant to be traumatised and depressed, so his emotions would have been locked inside him (and I thought RR played this extremely well). To me, the script was predictable (and I just hate that!) because it was obvious early on that the dead woman was his mother.
In short, the story showed so much promise, but didn't quite reach the heights for me.

Now there's a revelation - I would never have picked you as being HIS age!! (See? You've got me capitalising HIS name now!) I think it's the boundless enthusiasm and optimism with which you pursue your Richard obsession which threw me, and led me to believing you were no more than 25 or so, although your comments on The Silence seemed to come from someone with a well-developed grasp on life, one which can only come from a few more years on the planet.

Also, billsbunnie, I wanted to thank you for your message board entries, as they are a source of pleasure and entertainment for me. My favourite would have to be "Richard. Just Richard." The weird thing is that I understand exactly what you mean!!
