Why oh why....?

Did Kusturica chose this subject for a documentary?!! I mean, I can understand the utter pointless divinization that argentinians render to Maradona (I actually consider he WAS a great player though) but his story isn´t much worthy of Kusturica´s genius (so typical sports idol´s ascention, glory, decay and recovery)... Or maybe we´ll have to wait for final product.

What do you think?

reply

Dear Tecpatl (and I mean that) -

I just posted my "gut feelings" about the forthcoming movie on another thread. I don't think you'll like them. ;)

Kusturica is no genius. He may have had a moment of "genius" - but mostly, he is as overrated as Maradona himself (as a public figure, not as a player).

(Yes, I hope I am proven wrong, too.)

reply

The fact that I don´t agree with your opinions, doesn´t mean that I wont listen to your comments...

I don´t understand why you call Kusturica an hypocrite... Can you give me some reasons?

reply

Of course not.
I wish I had, but didn't really expect it.
In fact it was EXACTLY as I imagined it would be, only worse, quality-wise.

And why should anyone feel surprised...?

Name one star who, despite having the ability to perhaps buy the airconditioned box where sits the great Pele and other officials of FIFA and soccer's greats, chooses to sit in the gallery with fellow soccer fans, wearing not a suit but the jersey and cheering the team as another fanatic -----

thats the human in Maradona that makes him a great human ---- that he is the greatest footballer on God's earth is of course beyond debate regardless of what ignorants and jealous people say and think --- everyone knows that ever since he came into the field, FIFA could only stop him in the following ways

1982 - redcard him when he was bleeding throughout the games
1986 - couldnt
1990 - couldnt so get Germany a penalty in the last minute so there is no turnaround time
1994 - couldnt so get him out of the game and ban him forever so he does not come back and win another cup

MARADONA IS THE BEST!!!!

pelé redefined the way football was played, and brazilian football is second to none.

To compare Pelé to Maradona is comparing a calcualtor to computer, no regards to who or what brazilian football is second to!

reply

His grandmother is Croatian.

reply

Its believed upon research that his great great grandmother had croatian blood.

OK, let's watch this 2 videos:

Taking into account the context in which each of them played.

Dear Word trigger: stop embarrasing yourself, and go post in the new Pele's movie. Oh, yeah, there's not a new Pele movie! Haha.

reply

Kusturica was asked by Maradona to make this film because he felt he was the best director for the job. Probably he could relate to the human characters in his films. Kusturica is the best film director in the world (most unique and succesful style) - and the same goes for good ole Diego.

reply

Embarrasing myself? how can that be when I'm only talking about the player who changed football? You can't say that about Maradona, except probably Argentinians, who, in the most part, have themselves in the highest regards.

To Word trigger,
I am Swedish and i also think you are making a fool of yourself. It is not only Argentinians who claims that Diego is the greatest player ever played on the green pitch. You can not compare the powers of Pele to the mightness of a God like Diego. Incomparable! So stop act like a maniac with your Pelé-prppaganda. If you dont like Maradona, you can ask some lame director to make a film about your little idol. Peace!

PS I am going to see Diego play in Swedden this Wednesday. DS

You're Swedish? then I don't care what you say.

You can say all you want.

Fact: Pelé was given the title "footballer of the century" by FIFA

Fact: Pelé was given the title "Athlete of the Century" by the International Olympic Comitee

Fact: Has been declared a National treasure by the brazilian government.

Fact: Is the current holder of the youngest player in a world cup final record.

Fact: Holds the record of most championships played.

I can give you more, but the final fact is:
You are a guided donkey with the maradona carrot in front of you. Go lite some candles with your Maradona pic and masturbate for all I care.
Pelé is far more important in the history of football than that drug addict Maradona.

MAradona won the "player of the century" by fifa... people in internet vote and maradona won by far(58% vs 17% of pele), altrought fifa comitee also vote and maradona dont have even 1 vote, altrought that maradona won, but as you know pele always was with fifa and maradona against, so they give the prize to the 2 of them...

pele won 3 worlds cups, in 1 he was injured and almost didnt play, in the other he wast the star... he played with players in his level or even better..., like garrincha, zezinho, jairizinho... etc. the other one he played awesome and was the best of the cup.

Pele never go out of brasil, a football where they play 3 times a week, in an era where teams attacks with 4 or 5... and defend with 2, no off side trap... was nothing to do with modern and difficult football like now or in maradona era... altrought that he was an awesome player, but far from maradona, just watch the videos of pele and maradona and compare...

olimpic games athlete of the century??? pele never won or even played on an olimpic game... was just a stupid move from them...

reply

The prices doesn't matter at all:

First, because the prizes are given by corporations, and always corporations give the prices to the guys under their wings.
Pele and Maradona are both great players. Pele was maybe more perfect, but Maradona had an ability to bend the rules and to mesmerize the audience that no other player had and probably will have (Messi cant compare to him, his best performances were copy of maradona's trademark style).
Even tough, is difficult to compare players with different positions.

The reason they make a movie about Maradona is because he is an interesting character beyond the field, and Pele is boring as hell. Maradona even had a fight with the pope, and that gives him a "Beatles" appeal to the world.

There is no discussion tough that Brasil has better football overall, Brasil breaths football.

reply

Redifine football?!?!?!?
C'mon then you should look at Distefano, best player before Pele! (if not ask a Spaniard about him)

While Pele sold his sold to the Devil (somebody remember Cosmos in the 70s?) Maradona kept his integrity.
Kusturitza is an admirer of Maradona, because as all former Jugoslavian they like football.

I don't understand how ppl can even discuss about who is the best football player of all time, for me is not a discussion, without doubt El Diego!!!

reply

No, he didn't.

Maradona was a much more skillful player, there's a reason why his goals are remembered as the best... his dribbling capability was just beyond this world. Pelé was a great player, but not as good as Maradona.

reply

The fact remains that Maradona is the greatest player ever. (we will have to wait years to compare Messi with him). Nobody will ever be able to make a documentary that will show his imense influence on football.

reply

He doesn't sit with fellow fans at all. To me, it looks like he has a sort of open box. OK, so it isn't an enclosed box, but he certainly isn't mixing with the fans on the stands (based on Argentina's, not to mention Boca's, obsession with him I'm sure the little fella would be crushed under the stampede of the nutcase supporters). If he wasn't in this open box he couldn't lap up all the sickly fawning the everyday supporters shower him with and his already monstrous ego would be starved for 90 minutes.

So what if he wears the jersey? That doesn't make him any more human or great than Pele or anyone else and it certainly doesn't change the fact that he falsely sees himself as a revolutionary and a deity.

I understand he was a wonderful footballer who scored some wonderful goals. Unfortunately that was all he had going for him. He thinks he's a man of the people? Do me a favour. Not only was he a cheat, but he lived the life of a superstar when he was earning all that money in Italy, all whilst snorting half of the coke to come out of Columbia.

reply

it is nice to see the world through rose tinted glasses.

He was a great player .

in 1986, he cheated, he handed the ball against England.
in 1990, they were a dirty team who played against an excellent german team.
in 1994, anyone could see he was on drugs, look at his eyes after he scored and went to the camera. Ben Johnson had the same look in his eyes.

go to Boca Juniors and you can see Maradona at the games , in his own box.

if u really want to know., maradona was a kind of idol for how to explain ex-yugo

Honsetly im delighted that Kusturica is choosing to bend his perceptions on filmmaking and create a docu. And i dont think there is a better subject than such a contoversial figure as Maradona.
As for Kusta, i honestly think he is one of rare auteurs still active in the filmmaking. An europen topper right on the side of Almodovar, Kurosimaki, Jeunet and maybe Trier.

reply

Kurosimaki ????

You mean Aki Kaurismäki ?

I truly have many things to tell you, word inquisitor, about your dearest Pele and the magnanimous Maradona being half argentinian and italian myself, that is

But first i´d like to know something: where are you from?

I think this is an important fact, since you appear to consider a guy from sweden is not qualified enough to discuss football issues with you i´m extremely curious to find out from what country which such a rich and extense tradition you come from....................i do have some guesses though and hopefully they´ll be accurate so that this can get really interesting

reply

Umm... and how is the film?

It seem to me that most of u don't know much about football. In fact everywhere there is a "football fight" on the internet it involves most of the times the Pele/Maradona duel. I bet none of u have watched them play live(neither did i) but u only discus about what u saw in the media. Im 100% sure that ur opionion about who is the greatest was developed before u even saw at least a video of them playing, just from listening to that media crap.
The truth is that u are arguing for something that does not exist. U can't even compare 2 modern day players. They have to play on the same position, equal teams etc. E.g U can't compare Ronaldinho and Kaka cuz their styles are so different. Let alone compare 2 players who have played in different eras. Nobody questioned that they weren't good but for all i know there are players like Di Friedenreich,Stefano,Puskas,Best,Van Basten,Platini or especially Beckanbauer or Cruijf. What makes Maradona or Pele better than Cruijf? What player has ever achieved the level of Beckenbauer in defense? Just cuz he didn't scored goals doesn't mean he wasnt the best.
If u really want a "best player ever" than u should look at the problem like this: What player rose most about the others in his era?.

reply

People!!! This documentary is not only about football, it is aboout ANTIGLOBALISM ( do you use this word in English?). Both Kusturica and Maradona are against globalism and this film is actually about politics. It actually doesn't matter is he the best player all the time or Pele. They were both great players. But actually they are very opposite political personalities. Pele is typical NWO guy who made big money on promoting Coca - Cola and other bih corporations. Maradona had never done that...

reply

Finally some one talking about the film.
I'm Argentine, I still love Maradona, but I'm not interested in all this senseless discussion.

reply

I guess someone should do it? Out there is a lots of crap of everything and anything.

reply

This movie sucks, do not watch ok?

reply

why is it bad?

reply

Its "worthy of his talent" (if you want to put it so), because behind the typical surface story, there's a bigger political story, and since I think it is also, in a way Kusturica's personal story, he chose to tell it.
I can really feel Kusturica's pain for honestly dedicating his life to defending the ungrateful. Most Serbians now dislike him for his Serbian patriotism (and first of all his attitude against Serbian westernization). I was one of those Serbs, until I emigrated and saw the west with my own eyes. Now I know what Kusturica is trying to say. And what better way is there to connect to the people, then trough the football. I think I completely get his motives for making this film. And I liked the movie (I should have loved it though, since the subject touches me), but I expected higher quality (screenplay, sound, editing). Besides few technical shortcomings, its a really good film...

reply

i agree with you. I like the mix of political issues with Maradonas own opinions. It shows what a good person he is at heart.. that i know that he is not faking. If you look at him in this film you will know what hes about and that he stands for the people as much as they stand with him.
