A gay 'Karate Kid.'
This sounds like a gay version of "Karate Kid" to me. And there's nothing wrong with that; in fact, I'm all in favor of it. I just wanted to be the first to point this out.

shareYes I noticed that too when I read the plot summary. But like you said, there's nothing wrong with that. This looks like it could actually be quite a good film. Does anyone have any idea about release dates?

I guess viewing something first is too much to ask... Feels like your reading reviews by a 10 year old or someone who thrives on attention.
shareNot quite. I've seen some of this film and the script in pre-production. The is a very complex film, and works on many levels. To simplify it down to "a gay Karate Kid" is to really miss the point. There is homosexuality in it, but the film isn't about homosexuality; it's about tolerance and prejudice on many levels: race, sex, lifestyle, religion, and disease.
share It's a film about intolerance and ignorance regarding homosexuality and the AIDS virus in the early 80's. It's about the hard-line beliefs in religion and traditions that would keep a grandfather from honouring his granddaughter with a well earned and deserved black belt as well as a priest letting go of one of his own due to those ignorances and intolerances. I thought it was a good film. I saw it on Netflix's instant viewer. glad I did.
Being that its five years later, I assumed you've seen it. Did you like it? Were you tearing up at the end like me?
except it's not about the kid. it's about the sensei. hence the title.
shareAgreed. This isn't "a gay 'Karate Kid;'" it's much more complex, far-ranging, and subtle. I'll also add that this is the first movie to make me cry in a long time. Well done!
sharethough i will say that aspect is there, it runs through the movie, but it's little more than a setup for the main story.
