Horrible movie

No drama or horror, about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Avoid this movie, watching it is the only horror of Requiem.

You don't know what you are talking about. This film was great. The fact that it wasn't over the top like THE EXORCIST with head-turning crazy features made it more believable. I loved this film, it was very well directed and pretty realistic.

The Exorcist wasnt over the top.

just because the movie was more of a drama rather than a typical hollywood action-horror film with tons of CG doesn't make it bad. this movie clearly wasn't meant for you as you missed its point completely. maybe you should check out the Exorcism of Emily Rose instead. i think it's a rather good thing that not all filmmakers cater to the lowest common denominator.

I absolutely agree with blakepatrick. This movie is in no way a horror movie. Many people just are not used to European films. It is especially difficult to really get the gist and overtones of a foreign movie if you do not speak or understand the language. You just cannot compare the over-the-top Hollywood dreck with a well done foreign film. I enjoyed this movie very much, as I enjoyed seeing the German countryside, and especially like the actor Burghart Klaussner. Also to appreciate this movie, one must be familiar with German customs, and their way of life.

reply

Huh? What movie did you see? Your second comment is spot on but you misread the text totally. It said that the young woman died after multiple exorcisms. The real Michaela did die and her parents and two priests were tried and found guilty of causing her death. However, the four felons were slapped on the wrist with suspended sentences and put on probation.

He was saying that if The Exorcist ended the same way as Requiem, that's how it would've ended. I just caught the movie on IFC and I thought it was good.

Maybe if you weren't EXPECTING a horror movie, then you wouldn't have been disappointed. This movie was about a girl going through schizophrenia, or psychosis, NOT about a real demon possession or exorcism. Her friend even says, "you have no demons inside you, it's only YOU inside!" This movie wasn't meant to be a horror movie. And it wasn't packaged as such. Just because people see the word "exorcism" mentioned somewhere, right away they think it's going to be all crazy like The Exorcist. If you didn't apply YOUR expectations to the movie before you watched it, maybe you'd realize it was only your own disappointment that made this movie "suck" to you, and it's really not a bad movie at all.

It is sad to think that in the end no one could help her and she had to suffer all those torments.

Right. That's like automatically thinking The Rapture is a horror movie. The two are similar: slow movies that do give you something to think about.

reply

You did get some responses to your dry comment. It made me smile, even though I disagree.
You didn't find her "possessed" faces horrible? To me they were as frightening as the typical horror flick shockers might seem to a less sensitive person.
I liked the movie and found everybody extremely believable. The actors did a superb job.
The colors and fashions reminded me of my childhood in Germany.
This movie was not catering to a large, thrill-seeking audience. A quiet, long look at a real person who's troubled.

reply

I wasn't really moved by this movie but I agree with the acting and I have to admit the scenes where Michaela couldn't grab the crosses were a little creepy.

reply

Since demons doesn't excist i like it that they try to make the realistic approach to make it more true to reality since it is a story based on a true event. These over religious people killed this girl because they thought in their deluded mind that she was possessed, when in reality she was suffering from epileptic and shizofrenia.. Its a fair warning when religion get to much power.

reply

I also found this movie very slow and unengaging.

I can't believe they didn't include the trial, that was one of the reasons this whole series was interesting. In a German court of law, science and religion came into conflict, and religion lost.

reply

They didn't include the trial because that would just be a re-make of Emily Rose. And even though our lovely American producers believe stealing other's people's works is perfectly fine to bring in the bucks, foreign filmmaker's have a little pride and some class.

reply

The trial in Emily Rose had nothing to do with the actual trial, so it wouldn't be a remake, and it'd probably be a lot better.

pride and class, definitely. But the foreign filmmakers generally have a different goal in mind.

American filmmakers {generally} are aiming to make a lot of money, and if they stumble upon some art along the way, that's ok too. The foreign fimmakers (generally) are intending to make a work of art, and if some money falls their way, well...that's ok too.

for the record, I knew it wasnt going to be horror and I had no expectations of a real excorsism and I still found it pretty boring

it was the same speed and tone throughout the whole thing, I had no connection with any of the characters

and the exorcist was not over the top, it was right where it was supposed to be

reply

I agree. Miss Huller did a pretty exceptional job and the cinematography was excellent, but the film feels unfinished. Tacking on a text ending to a semi-factual account of a movie only works when it wouldn't otherwise be the most moving scene IN the movie. In other words, that's like tacking onto the end of star wars:

"Lukes father dies, death star blows up, and everyone else lives happily ever after"

instead of just filming twenty more minutes of film... And the movie is only 90 minutes anyway. I wanted it to be something really really powerful, and feel like it could have been, but I feel like the director sort of wasted most of the screen time.

reply

I've seen a lot of posts about people feeling this film was unfinished. But if you step back and analyze what this story was about, the film has a beautiful ending.

The film is not about the girl's illness or exorcism. It was about her wanting to experience life and also gain respect and trust from her parents. And by the end of the film, when everything has sort of come to a dramatic turn where she is either losing control of her own mind or being overtaken by demonic forces - the friends she made going out and experiencing life and her parents are there for her. Her mother finally respects her and Micheala has realized that no matter what happens, there is a purpose for all she is experiencing.

I was very satisfied with the ending. Audiences have been spoiled by cheap thrills, elaborate stories with so many twists and turns you forget what the real story is about, and it all builds up to some very dramatic climax that wraps everything up so nice with a little bow on top. We forget the beauty of a simple, well told story. I wish movies would drop the narrative gimmicks that have become the so-predictable norm and go back to "orignal" simple storytelling with style and class...and a dash of pride. Can't forget the pride now.

Hey if I wanted to read a movie, I'd simply read the book instead. Text in film is like pictures in books. Worse actually. Why make a film unless you're going to put images on screen?

The horror was in the fact that her family and friends, especially her narrow minded family and the ignorant priests, couldn't see she needed serious help rather than a ridiculous exorcism. And the drama is self evident if you watch the film.

For the 1 billionth time, please elaborate why this film is horrible. It appears that the practice of posting a movie is horrible just for the sake of posting is getting tired. Really.

Now, I got this film form the library. Never heard of it nor read any reviews. Just read the description on the DVD and looked at the cover which made me check this movie out. Well, the cover and the copy made it appear that this is a horror movie. In fact, it is more like a psycho/drama. I feel that the story would have gotten some edge if the supernatural aspect was toned down a bit. Yes, it is based on a true story, but creative license would justify the changes. Yes the film moves at a snail's pace so you get to know the characters better The acting is very good, especially the father and her gal pal.

A different take on exorcism. Not in the same league as The Exorcist.

I agree with one of the posts where the film would have been better if it had a proper ending. I am not talking about a Hollywood ending but, instead of sentences explaining what had happened, it would have been better if it was dramatized. Good at best but far from horrible.
