On the test, why did Chris Gardener have an Essay Question?

The other intern in the elevator scene seemed disturbed or angry or something when he found out Chris had gotten an essay question on his test and he did not. Why did Chris get the essay question?

reply

Everyone had the question. The other intern realised that he had missed that question, as it was on the back page. That's why he quickly left the elevator - so he could go back up and finish.

reply

LOL!! Everyone had the essay question.

reply

Oh! Haha, that makes sense.

reply

i'm pretty sure that on one had the essay question. Will Smith's character was just saying that to play with the other intern and make him stressed out. He knows there's not an essay question.

reply

You can actually see it from two perspectives.

1. There was no essay question on the back but Chris was just screwing with him and making him nervous. Not to mention him running back into the office probably made him look worse.

2. Actually was an essay question on the back and he missed it.

Introduce a little anarchy, you upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos

I think there really was a question almost definitely and Chris was just telling the guy.

There was no sign that it was pre-meditated and I think the character in the film is not depicted as the kind of person who actively sabotages others- he just does whatever he can for himself. It's about self esteem not malignance.

That's at least what I felt the movie and this moment were in line with.

That's true BloodOps you can look at it in two ways as you describe it.

Personally, I can't tell if he was being sarcastic or not. It was really ambiguous.

Either or it's a good scene.

reply

If that was the case, then his character would be deceitful. That's not something the character is supposed to be portrayed as.

There was actually an essay question on the test. The Intern wasn't thorough and Chris was. It seems the Intern assumed that finishing fast would demonstrate his intelligence. He was overconfident and condescending.

However, Chris took his time and made sure to look on the back of the test. It is up to the test taker to do this. He wouldn't deliberately stress out the Intern. It wasn't a game.

Chris was genuine to ask this Intern what he thought about the essay question. The Intern rushed to finish first and overlooked the essay question. This shows he is not keen.

We see that Chris is put into many situations to win this job. He never turns down any of these requests. $5 loan, parking car, missed appointment with CEO, get coffee for instructor, taking ride with firm partner to demonstrate his abilities, and etc. Resumes don't always tell the full story. In my opinion, the partners already knew Chris would be the one and just tested his integrity throughout the internship.

He proved his loyalty. He signed on valuable clients. He never made excuses.

All test takers had the essay question.

reply

i guess there was no essay question in the test!! Will Smith said it with sarcasm.

reply

I think it was supposed to show how dedicated Chris was. It looked like he'd finished the test second to the guy in the elevator. But then it turns out they guy who'd finished first hadn't even seen the essay question. But Chris had to work twice as hard as everyone else, in order to get back to his son and to the shelter place on time...

reply

Exactly right Ironic Tonic. What are these fools talking about saying he was just trying to trick the guy? SMH!

reply

you're dumb

reply

Fromt that scene i think Smith met the best of the Xam man and even the best didn't complete the question as he forgot or didn't see. So from that scene we can understand that Smith will be appointed. (U can understand it only from the climax as Smith wins the job) . So may be thats the proof supporting Smith was the best !!

reply

They gave him a different test because he was black. The white guy didn't have to write an essay. Still, he did enough to impress them.

reply

How about we hear from somebody who has actually taken one of these financial industry exams (i.e. the Series 7), whether they typically have essay questions or not? I suspect they do.

reply

The CFA exams have an essay component, but it's basically multiple paragraph answers to very specific questions. I've taken graduate finance exams that have essay answers, but they are basically some simple writing or a conclusion supporting/backed up by calculations. I'm guessing if there was an essay component to the test it would be something like the later. There would be little diagnostic value to a long written component on a finance exam, as the ability to generate flowing prose isn't really part of the job.

The number of fools on IMDb is overwhelming.

They were all indeed given an Essay question to answer at the back of the paper.

I've uploaded images for the scene for you all dummies here.
