Why was this movie originally rated R and edited into PG-13?

I wanna know why PULSE was originally rated R and edited into PG-13.

If you see the unrated version, you will learn the ghosts in the computer don't just stare back at the characters but they begin committing suicide.

They edited the theater version down that brought it to a PG-13 rating

That's some seriously disturbing *beep* I don't understand though, if they're already dead, why bother killing themselves?

It's pprobably wishful thinking on the ghosts parts. Those are probably people that ended up disintegrating and turning to the "ash" and couldn't bring themselves to kill themselves. So, it may just appear to loop footage when the ghosts themselves are just trying to end their afterlife suffering, whatever that might be.

Then again, it might not matter. Since Josh was one of them, too, and he committed suicide. It could be that once they steal whatever it is from a person, that part that is stolen will just linger like Josh, or at least that representation of Josh, did.

It could also be an encouragement thing, could be an infection thing, like in the Ring. The movie was really vague about explaining almost anything, so it's hard to tell.

It was a movie made for the freaky camera effects and to present a concept but not really a full plot. It wasn't fleshed out much more than presenting a concept.

Because that way young teenage girls, and young teenage couples can go and see it in the masses and make the production company a lot of money. I mean, why bother actually caring about the content of the movie when you can make a big pile of cash.

I saw the Unrated version and I was wondering what exactly was "unrated" about it. There's no blood or gore, no nudity and basically no swearing. Other than "intensity" this thing could have gotten a PG.

Your common sense is the reason why you aren't on the ratings council.

I'm guessing the R rating came from the guy shooting himself onscreen and the depiction of the woman hitting the ground. And possibly the second onscreen victim melting into the wall.

There's a scene with a girl throwing herself off the water tower that was edited out of the theatrical cut. It occurs right after Mattie watches her professor try to get hit by her bus.
