Well, the dad tells him the emotions 'reflected' in the tiger's eyes are Pi's emotions. 'reflected'.
When Pi would not have been told this, he might have get killed. (And later, his knowlege of physics enables him to be curious enought about the storm so he does not drown with the others, so his appa did a pretty good job, after all)
Narcissus is never told about what he sees 'reflected' in water... and he dies.
Is Pi a narcissic character ?
