why all the negative reviews?

why all the harshly negative reviews? the "enemy" is corny. but other than that, it wasn't bad. it is pretty scary at times. i got chills from a scene near the end. plus it has a good build. i give it a 6.5 out of 10.

oh yeah, but the story doesn't really explain itself well. there are a few questions left unanswered. however, still entertaining if nothing else.

The questions should be left unanswered. I'd have liked it more if there was even more mystery.

*SPOILERS*

I agree--I find the reviews here imbalanced and overly harsh. I mean, of course, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but I think too many people expect PURE, WORSHIPFUL GOLD in every single movie. ...Okay, we're watching low-budget horror--where do we get off expecting shining perfection?

My only real complaint was the film's climax. The first time the grand monster was shown, my reaction was, "...OH...HOLY...HELL!" I loved it. It was a brief, blurred shot of an enormous, primordial, abstract being. Totally dug it. But sadly, it later became overused. The climax rendered it too concrete. Just another movie monster. Shame. The film's final moments, however, I did like. Restrained. Dark. And ultimately, very sad (which I felt was a strong emotion throughout this film).

To be honest, the movies with mixed reviews are nearly always my favorite. It's the first sign that a film might be refusing to pander. (...Or it might just mean it's half-...butted--not the case here).

As for this film, I felt it was intelligent and cool, with an enormous amount of talent repeatedly visible in terms of production, acting, music, atmosphere, and style. Very high marks to all involved.

The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I was pretty impressed with this movie. I'm DEFINITELY in agreement that the "monsters" were embarrassingly retarded, but the movie somehow creeped me the hell out in just about every other frame. Can't remember the last movie that gave me that dream-like sense of foreboding, but I thought this pulled it off well.

And I also liked the man vs. nature aspect that so many people seem to have despised. I know, I know, all that "protect the environment" *beep* is everywhere now, and it gets old. But I thought the movie did a great job of using nature, and turning it into an often creepy "bad guy".

At least, it certainly did a much better job of using nature than "The Ruins", which was one of the worst pieces of trash I've ever seen.

Protecting the environment is NOT *beep*. :p

Seeing House (Zach Gilford) inexpicably naked was worth watching this movie alone. Great butt.

I found this was a great movie. Larry Fessenden has very much potential, but I have noticed that all of his films involve a spirit called the Wendigo. He knows how to work very well with this topic, but I've found that it is a over used concept for him. Minding that, this movie can really get inside your head. It has a chilling effect on it's viewers. The Wendigo is an ancient native american legend about a creature that gets to weak people in the far north. That is what the creature was in this film. With a bigger budget and a major movie distributor, we'd be looking at a blockbuster film.

I liked the movie and wonder why the negative replys and poor score but I guess in time more people may watch it and I bet there will be a sequel to it.

Arguments over the left wing/right wing environmental aspects of the film aside, I was pretty creeped out by this...Trapped in the Arctic Circle with a bunch of people that are losing their minds/getting their eyes eaten out of their heads/bleeding to death for no reason...If anything, the low budget nature of it made it seem a little more "real" to me than certain high budget horror flicks...6.5/10

I agree, this was an effective movie, the criticisms are the "Ed Pollack" kinds of people in denial who could not see the truth of the movie ... that is why it is so effective. The movie addresses the childish simplicity of humans who on each side of the issue are just children in adult bodies playing adult games that can be deadly. This movie was pretty creepy and scary too ... much more than "The Thing" which is had been compared to.

This is a very underrated movie. The overall message of the movie may have been preachy but the movie was suspenseful and is one of the better horror movies I've seen in recent years. Considering how bad most horror movies are it's a shame when a rare good one comes along but people still find a reason to hate it. This isn't a documentary. I don't have an opinion on global warming but I know a good horror movie when I see it.

reply

Hmmm ... to me the movie without the "preachy" message would not be very good. I like that they went out on a limb to make a statement and used the horror movie genre, which I usually do not bother with.

One of the better horror movies you've seen in recent years? really?

In the past few months I've watched Pontypool, (REC)2, and Splice, all of which blow this out of the water.

This movie had some potential, and decent acting, but squandered it.
Not a complete failure by any means, but any thriller set in an isolated drilling station in the Arctic is going to have a modicum of suspense just because of the setting.

reply

Because the movie was just a mess. It wasn't done well and it felt as though the writers didn't know how to end this movie.
